like most websites we have a userbase that consists of a wide group of people of different nationalities, genders, races and religions. we here at the "stupid and mean forum" have had no issue making fun of users regardless of where they stand on these spectra. but one thing we often don't talk about is making fun of users with mental illness and disabilities. this is often seen as going "too far" or being "over the line" and while you can be disadvantaged in one of those other ways and it affects your whole life but no one beats an eye when you are made fun of for it. so my question for you all is the following:
making fun of mental illness: funny or hilarious?
the case for funny is that it should be treated the same way all other things can't do anything about should be treated. regardless of who you are, where you are or what you believe you should be treated as an equal and be mocked and berated for your dumb ideas and bad posts.
the case for hilarious is that unlike being black or gay or a muslim, you can do something about mental illness, and many people come out of it living fuller and happier lives. through therapy and/or medication (not to mention the most important part, a healthy lifestyle) people have done wonders for themselves. so people who struggle with these illness just aren't trying hard enough. they are abusing their illness to get a free pass to play computer games all day instead of being a contributing member to our society. if anyone needs to be taken down a notch, it's the mentally ill.
anyway, post your position on this two-sided debate.
