Riff Raff Project: Get Gaben the Troll to post in Riff Raff

Well, I have noticed Gabe has quite an ego on here, but it's nothing too bad. He does help the community quite a bit though. For example, he's one of the only people who gives BNM article writers helpful advice and points them out to the Textile Guide and the Entry guide and all that instead of yelling "+1 Dedpul" like most people do. Now there are more people doing this, but most of them were influenced by Gabe and he was pretty much the original (as far as I know).

Well, this is Riff-Raff, so I'm being a bit too serious.

boooooring

Besides, doesn't this constitute as public harassing? Which is specifically spoken against in the Riff Raff rules? Because I'd say trying to provoke Gaben into posting in here constitutes as public harassment.

8. What happens in Riff Raff stays in Riff Raff. Riff Raff promotes shitposts and making fun of each other, but that doesn’t mean you can spill it out into the other boards. Keep the other boards on topic and don’t chase users around the forums mocking them. The regular rules apply out there and you’ll get in deep doo-doo.

6. Be Friendpfffhaha sorry, let me try again. Ahem, Be Frhahaha. No, that rule is not enforced here. Don’t go cyberbullying or publicly harassing, but if you have beef this is the place to vent. We promise not to laugh at you ;).

Besides, trying to coax someone who doesn't post in Riff Raff to post here for the sole purpose of suspending them doesn't exactly keep things in Riff Raff. In fact, disregarding the Riff Raff rules entirely, I'd say that since it was taken outside of the board and onto Gaben's wall, then site rules apply.

you mean this one?

Behave. We want our site to be welcoming place for both old and new users. Please keep your comments and posts constructive and considerate in tone. If you observe a user breaking a rule, try advising the user in the right direction, rather than posting insults or harsh criticisms. If the user’s behavior persists, contact a moderator.

@TripleA
Yes, that would be the rule

@Mangy Black Sheep
No such luck I'm afraid, mods can't be suspended. The ability to suspend Blubber is a sorely missing feature though.

Too bad

all right, another fun riff raff thread mucked up by humourlessness.

soooo let's look at the two accusation against little old me.

1) Harassment. Aggressive pressure or intimidation according to google's definition, this is hardly aggressive. Hell, it's not even effective, he hasn't posted and I have yet to get my suspension rocks off.

2) What was posted outside Riff Raff is bound by the site rules. This is actually true. But, if you look at the posts made on his wall they are hardly rude or offensive. He was asked to post in 2 different threads and he didn't.

Let's suspend jokes in the joke forum so we can have threads about [s4s] runoff and topics that are suitable for even the most wet noodly of users. haha great.

Well this is your first offence, so I'll just give you a slap on the wrist and a stern "don't do that again" and that should be enough for now. Unless… you want me to suspend you?

@Blubber
If this was one of your usual shitposts, then I'd be fine, but I feel this goes beyond that, breaking the rules that YOU made. Besides, I'd say the moment you start trying to involve someone who doesn't even post in Riff Raff is the moment you've broke the "what happens in Riff Raff stays in Riff Raff" rule. And as well as that, it doesn't matter if you didn't end up suspending him, that was your intention, you probably would have if your plan worked.

So if someone attempts to shoplift but fails everything is perfectly okay? Your plan failing half way through doing it is a completely different case to not acting on your thoughts in the first place

okay so for your shoplifting analogy to make sense it would be me yelling at the store keeper "hey i'm gonna steal a snickers bar if you let me in your store and then he doesn't let me in.

sounds like i still haven't even touched a snickers bar

I wouldn't say your actions are comparable to that stage of the plan (Although completely off topic, why would you have to ask the store keeper to let you in? Surely you could just walk up to the snickers bar without having to interact with the shop keeper in the first place). You had already come here to recruit people to help badger Gaben into posting. I'd say in comparison to the shop lifting analogy, the first stage of getting Gaben to post here was comparable to getting the Snickers in your pocket without being noticed. The suspending part is more comparable to just walking out the store.

"why would you ask the store keeper to let you in"

why would i make a thread? i mean, if i really wanted to be sneaky i'd do it in irc. as of this writing their are 405 views on this thread, it's pretty likely gaben was at least one of those. why are things always taken so seriously on the shitposting board???

I felt it broke YOUR rules that YOU wrote and agreed on. I have permission to drop the jokiness when the rules are being broken as they stand now, and that's what I felt happened.

i'm always surprised how it's plausible to you that i broke the rules i wrote myself (something i haven't done) than making a joke (something i do 100% of the time)

If a joke breaks a rule, then it doesn't matter whether it was a joke or not. It did break the rules as they stand now, you did write the rules which were broken, and even if for arguments sake it didn't break the Riff Raff rules, since this was taken out of Riff Raff, then it breaks the site rules.

i'm gonna drop the snark and say i honestly do not know where you are coming from. There was a public thread made for gaben to post it that obviously stated he would be suspended if he did. he was asked in a non-threateningly to post in the thread and another. i do not think very highly of gaben but i believe him to be literate and he did not post. it's not like i was even close to getting him to post and then even farther away from actually suspending him. i do not see any rules being broken by my joke thread.

I just want to note that I'm being so forward on this because it was Gaben himself who came to me worried about you continuously using your suspension powers on him. Now this was something I also discussed briefly with RandomMan, and I was actually the one who came to your defence on this. Sure, I don't agree with the aim of this thread, I've made that much clear, but I at least have some trust that despite all your fucking around, you would know never to take it too far (which you didn't). Hell, I even enjoy your fucking around normally, Riff Raff wouldn't nearly be as fun without your shitposts.

The reason I disagree with this is for the reasons I've already stated, so I don't think I'll be able to convince you of my reasoning. But to restate it one last time, one of the Riff Raff rules states that what happens in Riff Raff stays in Riff Raff, therefore when you take the crusade against Gaben to his own wall, it's breaking the rules. I know that you weren't exactly horrible with him on his wall, but your intentions was still the same as it was in this thread, therefore the joke was taken outside of Riff Raff. I don't feel like trying to coax someone who doesn't usually post here into posting here solely to suspend him is fair (Think of how much of the comment section I could suspend if I tried to get them all to post here). Even if the chances were low, there was still a chance, and the consequences would still be the same if that low chance actually came true. The intention is still there regardless of whether it was a joke or whether the chances were low, and that is what I object to.

Also, I have to say, despite how I act sometimes I actually hate to get serious in Riff Raff. Often my posts are just poorly phrased to sound strict (I don't really have a way with words) or I'm strict because I feel it is necessary, as was the case here.

i think the big difference is how we interpret "what stays in riff raff". i always thought that it meant that trouble started in riff raff couldn't be brought into other forums and i still believe what was being done is try to bring trouble into riff raff. what i'm getting is you feel all riff-raff related things should remain completely isolated within riff raff. and i guess that's something that should be sorted out.

it's disappointing how serious a lot of these threads end up getting, but i guess the growing pains of a shitposting board.

also a brief shoutout to whoever upvoted all my posts and to the guy who downvoted all my posts. you are both part of the reason i think karma should be dropped from the forums.

Well at least there's one thing we agree on, the removal of karma. And I'd totally like to discuss the interpretation of the rule to get a solid interpretation, but not here. Things are serious enough.
