What KnowYourMeme Looked like 10 Years Ago

Screencapped from the Wayback Machine. Some thumbnails didn't load. Can you believe KYM had around 1,100 confirmed memes compared to 4,800 today?

What do you think changed? What do you think stayed the same? Is it better or worse?

KYM 10 years ago? Ponies. Lotsa ponies. I wonder if we'll ever see such a phenomenon again.
"What do you think changed?" – Politics everywhere, but this can be said about the entire internet. Also, I think people are much more prone to butthurt for various reasons.
"What do you think stayed the same?" – Well, new memes keep appearing, that's something I guess.
"Is it better or worse?" Worse IMO.

Something I notice right off the bat:

The front page looks way better.
There are more to choose from, which allows users to choose, making the view counts more representative of the community in general. The metadata is neatly on the side.

But now, the thumbnails take up a third of the page-- on mobile! They outstage the titles. Image and video gallery count are not shown. It shows the favorite button on top-left corner, as always.
On the bottom, from right to left, there’s a comment anchor, the Facebook share button, and the time & date.

Back when Cringeworthy was open and we didnt have Tiktok or many ads to the point of needing adblock AND we had the proper thumbnail for the Reaction Faces gallery…. Oh to go back to those days

after all those years, MLP still remains in the top gallery seat

Looking at the top galleries, i'm still relieved memes and subcultures remain popular, of course political drama remains an eyesore but it is not as omnipresent on the website as some fear

I remember being irritated over the pony spam, now it's ceaseless variations of didactic wojaks comics.

The biggest change I've noticed about kym itself is the site's been slowly dying and the userbase's numbers have stagnated over the years. I recognize almost everyone here now and I'm not a very active user to begin with.

What's the same? Horny memes are still as popular as ever. Oh, and Pokemon too, usually together.

and the userbase's numbers have stagnated over the years.

Numbers have actually gone up, both in terms of active users/user activity and in overall uploads/comments etc. The forums have certainly languished, but the site has not. Whether or not you think the shift to comments is a good thing is up to you.

Well good, thank you for correcting me. Despite all its problems, I enjoy this site quite a lot so its nice community isn't in decline.

There should be an option to revert back to it in the settings if you're viewing the site when you're logged in.

I'm still using the old set-up as the new one made it a pain to search through the galleries.

idk, maybe it's just because I don't come here much anymore, but the whole site layout and everything feels remarkably similar to what it was back then. I guess there aren't as many ponies anymore, though. hell, I left that behind like six years ago.

The most evilest thing you could've done back in the day was post a picture of a pony outside of the MLP gallery. And any gallery that beat MLP in gallery views that day was seen as a moment of celebration. Those were simple times.

Not quite 10 years ago, but 9 years ago a mod suspended a prolific pony poster and huge Rarity simp named Advance for a slightly-too-lewd Rarity pic.

Open (but facetious) rebellion followed, with everyone (the mod included) changing their avatars to something Rarity-related and their usernames to some play off of the word "Advance" during the suspension.

FYI, the mod is Judas in the picture above.

Considering I turn 11 here in half a year, I think the crazier part is that this lasted for so long. Not in a way of "Digg died, everyone moved to Reddit" but frankly I got worried about the mod politics tearing the place apart lmao

…do we get any scout badges for being around this long? I can't remember if I'm right to myself for missing Alex Mercer. Where's RandomMan and his Angel profile pic…

We're at the point where sometimes the YouTube feed will give you old, long-gone KYM users' successful yt channels. Alex is doing fine as are a lot of the golden age users that left. Mostly because, y'know, the kids went to college and the adults got families. We're used to looking at prisons from the outside, not the other way around.

I will still find Blubber and hit him with my car though, for old times' sake.

Those poor bastards they have my condolences

Caro (who I married) and I just had our first kid. I'm still around, but certainly not to the same extent that I was while in undergrad.

The only reason I've been particularly the active these last few weeks is to give myself something to do between diaper changes while on paternity leave.
