Oh, it comes pretty much as second nature depending on your major, in my case it's Communications/Journalism so essays and long winded writings in general are the norm. Hell, half the time I'd say it's fun and the other half of the time it's business as usual. The only hard part would really be meeting that word count/page quota for something that can be explained away in 5 pages instead of 15.
There's no one way to write an essay. Some people like to begin thg first draft without a plan and let it grow organically, then clean it up in the next. Writing itself is a good way to organize your thoughts, after all. I've even heard that writing the introduction last can work since, by then, you know what the paper is really about. Others like to plan the whole thing out using a mapping technique. Just experiment until you figure out what works for you. As long as your have a thesis statement and topic sentences, the rest should follow naturally.
Essays were one of those things I dreaded when I was in school.
I had trouble trying to get words on a page, especially when you had to come up with your own topic. I also had a bad habit of putting them off until last to prolong everything. The pressure to write in a short time did help me find what to write, but it wouldn't always get the highest marks.
To go off of what Farm Zombie said, I would need to outline points usually go for a format like this:
Opening
First Paragraph
Second Paragraph
Third Paragraph
Closing
In general I liked to write essays, however I can't say that I liked almost all types of them. During my studying there always were topics and subjects which were difficult or boring for me and writing the essay in such cases was really hard. I liked the most of all various creative types and with topics which were really interesting for me, in such cases I felt so motivated and inspired at the same time :)
Main things for writing any essay are choosing the topic for it, defining main thesis, researching for various scientific/informational resources according to it and analyzing them crytically. Then you need to make an outline for your whole work, write a strong introduction and conclusion, and make proofreading for the ready text. Inculding good citations, revelant facts, details and examples in your work are important things too.
I think that it's possible for everybody to develop essay writing skills, you just need to be patient and practise a lot, especially at university because the essays there are much more complicated then the school ones. There are many students' unions which can help you with useful tips and examples or well-written essays, and special services too, you can find a good personal writing tutor in both cases too.
