Is it a psychological thing, like thinking about how someone would react to "the act of" losing their face be the thing? Or would a set of VR glasses that just replace faces with a blur of a person's skin color do the exact same thing for you?

I've seen some slime girls (though it's been a long time so I couldn't tell you where) that didn't have faces as they were meant to be a slimes composed of smaller organisms, so they could do things like breathing, seeing and eating without a face. Out side of that, Slenderman, and The Question, I can't really say I've seen too many examples that weren't just nightmare jump scares.

Now you do include in the Tumblr characters with masks that are smooth like Commander Cobra. The Cyborg Haydee from the game of the same name technically fits this description and there is bit of fanart of her (though it's mostly because of her bust, not because she's "faceless")
