i know i didnt post it on /b/, but i found it on a pokedad thread. this is the only place i uploaded the (OC) image to. im just wondering which of you posted it. heres a fragment of the screencap

it was somewhere in the middle of the thread. all posts surrounding the nidoking are irrelevant and are to be ignored.

Okay, this is a tricky subject.

As a site that catalogs and analyzes memes, it is not in our interests to influence the spread of memes, and we frown upon people using the site to spread their own memes.

Now, by posting original content to KYM, it has spread to 4chan. In effect, those who are observing and analyzing mems have influenced the place where the meme proliferated. That is a conflict of interests to our site. We would prefer if our users would refrain from posting their own original content in meme entries. We want to document memes as they occur, not cause them.

If you would like to create original content, feel free to share it in the forums. Our images section within a meme entry should represent instances FOUND, not created specifically for the entry.

Don't mean to sound like a dick, but if you want to share original content, do so in the forums, or on 4chan its self.

In the past, I've done this with an image or two, but I hadn't yet seen how how KYM could end up influencing other Internet Memes. I don't think that one image here or there is any big deal, but there is the potential for this to become a problem.

Hypothetical scenario
Assume we have a user who has created their own unique spin on a pre-existing meme. Let's say someone decides that they can think of hundreds of acronyms for FSJAL, so they create a new spin on the image. The new images would have the "anticipation guy" but each instance contains different words for what FSJAL stands for. Now let's assume that this user uploads tons of his variants to the MemeDB for the existing FSJAL meme. This is like stating "this is how this meme works and appears" but it's a fabrication. Now suppose the idea that FSJAL is an acronym catches on, and someone decides to ask, "where did this FSJAL as an acronym stuff start?"
We would just have to say, "One of our users made it up, and hoped to use us to spread it."
This is related to the idea of why we deadpool memes that people try to start here. But when it's an image in an existing entry it's just much harder to police.

well, someone had to make all of the derivatives. if someone made a different fsjal drawing, (not a variation, mind you) it would still be an example of people using fsjal and it spreading on the internet.

People absolutely had to make the derivatives, but we would rather catalog the derivatives that people are spreading organically on other websites. We look at Know Your Meme like it's an encyclopedia of things that have happened. So if people start to use it to launch memes, that's like writing yourself into the encyclopedia before doing anything noteworthy.

Create your own instances, by all means, but spreaad them actively in other forums, and let them catch on in other places before uploading them here.

Question, though. What if (hypothetically) a meme accidentally took off and spread from this site? Not a fabricated entry, but say it was a phrase in a comment. Would that be organically spread? We would have to document our own site as a source…

ZING!

Zing!

i still don't like ZING!

I was RIGHT THERE when it started and I don't like it.

I put truckloads of thought into what words I make up and the one with the least thought, ZING! is the one that catches on.

I have noticed the plethora of words i couldn't find in a dictionary.

"Zing!" as a term to congratulate a person on a particularly witty repartee started a long time before KYM. I noticed Scott Kurtz used them a lot in PVPonline.com webcomics years ago.

Yes I understand I didn't invent the term Zing.

I'm talking about this foolishness below.
