When did people start calling it lurking instead of surfing? It kinda makes me feel creepy.

Lurking and surfing aren't the same thing. Lurking implies that you frequent a messge board, but you keep to yourself without posting anything.

The phrase "lurk moar, newfag" implies that one should keep quiet and read everything going on in order to gain an understanding of everything around them, as opposed to spouting uneducated opinions or asking other noobish questions.
