Original Thread idea (i hope)

So lets make a fictional world.

I'll start off, its one of those planets that's Earth, yet its not. Like the world in Ace Combat, or the one in Final Fantasy 7.

Now someone should add something to it, like a good name. Keyword being Good.

I'm personally fascinated by the geography of the "reverse Earth". Maybe we could use that?

If people like that, then in terms of a name for this world, we could of course just flip a common name for ours, leaving options like Therr, Threa, and Arret. But idunno, that might be a bit lame.

Fuck it, i say we call it Therrat, it will be pronounced like There-rat. Like a mixture of all em. I think that sounds nice

Should we add magic, advanced tech. Or both?

Do both technology and magic. Have the main setting be a modern day downtown which could be a mix of the big American cities. Now, how about the government?

Well, if we're using magic, maybe the government could be magic-based, or have magic-related functions?

Like, judges are required to possess a certain level of psychic ability, the ruler has a Secretary of Magical Affairs, etc.

I think that technology should be magitek (mixture of magic and technology).

About government…I think we should make up continents and countries (capital cities and borders for the countries too) first and then we give them specific kinds of governments. Any ideas for those?

Maybe this will help for names?

For a map I'll go with 0.9999…=1's idea

I'm not opposed to the notion of including magic in this world, but to give it a big twist, why not have the sorts of things that we associate with supernatural-type magic be explainable by the people's scientists?
As for names: I do like the sound of Therrát- has a nice fantasy/foreign ring to it. I also think it'd be cool to have at least some of them for the landmasses, oceans, seas etc. be twists on the ones that we use, in connection with giving the people of Therrát basically the same linguistic history as ours. For example, that very large island near the Equator that stretches into the "superocean" could be called Mediterrania_.
Also of note is that around where the latitude of the center of the Philippine Lake and the longitude of the New Guinea Lake (both placeholder names, by the way) meet is the highest peak of Therrát, as that's the reverse of our world which has Challenger Deep
Deep at that location. It stands at a whopping ~35,785 feet.

I propose the idea of giant trees, because those are cool. Also mega hub cities because those do well in fantasy settings. And if this magic/science hybrid goes through, each hub could specialize in something.

Do we have humans, or some kind of other generic fantasy race, or something completely new?
I vote that since we have a reverse earth, we should have humans, but call them something else, like a reverse name or something.
Also the Great Lakes should be islands with the same names as the lakes.

For simplicity's sake, I think the words that refer to people and humanity in general should stay the same. However, perhaps they could carry additional words that are used within the realm of ancient stylings of magic, which are still practice despite it being modernized with science. I personally like the Sanskrit word for a human being, manusya.

I got some races

Basic Humans

I don't have any names for the rest so someone else can deal with that

A race of sentient machines. They were a creation of man and went on to become their own society

A race that instead of being multicellular are “multi-viral” organisms. Another creation of man.

A bipedal race of Arthropod like creatures. They possess a tail much like that of a scorpion. They are capable of phenomenal strength, with males being able to lift 50 tons and females being able to lift 75 tons.

A bipedal mammalian race with traits of lions and wolves.

A race of Reptilian Like creatures. They have traits resembling or alligators (head and body) and iguanas (tails) and chameleons (long tongues).

They possess many avian characteristics, being very similar to modern raptors and prehistoric raptors.

These beings are known by the heroes as ghosts. At some point in their evolutionary period they were able to evolve beyond their bodies. Becoming pure electromagnetic signals

A race of winged beings, they are angelic in appearance.

Lets have it so that Humans and their creations use Advanced tech. But the other species use magic and shit.

maybe add "corrupted" humans
ones that are so infused with magic they barely count as human, being something of a witch or cult type

Magical Abominations. Sounds awesome, but do they also live in "corrupted" areas? Maybe add in an insectoid race?

I was thinking the corruption changes very on the types of magic, and often live in lower class areas, or outside of the larger cities

I'd like to see a species of these "creatures" that people believe exist and are always watching, but there are no reports of them. Like some sort of omnipresent eldritch abominations fueled by denial of them. Like, a living corruption or plague?

Good idea, maybe they live in ruins of former cities that everyone has forgotten about as well?

You Are Reading This wrote:

pretty much covers outside the main cities, but yea, along with that elderitch stuff mentioned above, cults can form in the ruins under such beings

Maybe have a sort of tension between citizens (humans or otherwise) with overt magical abilities as the upper class and the non-magic citizens as the lower class.

It was mentioned that an idea of only people with magical abilities can attain political and social power, so maybe have a sort of mini-uprising a la The Equalists to take down the magic-dominated goverment.

Allllllll the while maybe another country founded on worship of an eldritch horror (maybe this Big Dick Smurf man we've been dreading) is planning an assault on the county while they're preoccupied with preventing a civil war.

I'd like to see as this. Most humans were incapable of magic, so in order to avoid being pwned by the other races they advanced their tech in order to compete, in human society people with magic are discriminated against, sense magic is considered the weapon of the enemy.

Nice fantastic discrimination, I like it. Any approval on races/religions/areas?

You Are Reading This wrote:

Nah, i'd get to complicated then, though there are different human factions is less discrimination and more just different countries type things.

I would say that the machines and their bio abominations were attempts at creating something that could completely pwn magic users. However the Machines gained sentience of their own and rebelled and carved out there own corner of the world in a place that was considered to hostile for organic lifeforms to survive in.

The multi-viral organisms are basically supposed to be like Heller and Mercer from prototype. But the only reason they aren't wtfstomping everything in sight is because of magic, and the tech used by machines and humans allow them to adequately hold them off.

Oh cool! I have to leave for an hour, which is a shame because I want to stay and help develop this, but here's something at least:

I added a couple of possible "civilization spots" to the map for places that I think would be likely to feature civilization. I'm no expert, but I did pay attention in school, and I've played more Civilization than I'd care to admit. I'll go over the spots quickly:
Red- Kind of like the Scandanavia of our world
Orange- All the jungle would probably make it hard to settle, but with such a prime spot for controlling trade and travel, people will keep fighting each other and trying to settle it anyway.
Yellow- Kind of like Eurpoe,of our world, but a bit less temperate, so maybe more like China?
Purple.-Good spot to control travel, and temperate. Being backed by mountains is a plus.
Pink- Temperate, and pretty much last favorable spot before harsh desert.
Green- Desert dwelling tribe of some sort?
Of course, things could change radically depending on if rivers exist, and what resources are available and where.
Gotta go I'm late!

A "Reverse Earth" would mean 71% percent of it would be made of terrain, instead of water (29%), that means even less potable water, the world would have something around 0,29% ~ 0,15% of it's surface in potable water. I believe there would be endless wars for water supplies.

I would say that, the scorpion like race inhabit the desert regions.
The Angels live in high altitude mountainous regions
A the Wolf/Lions prefer colder climates
The lizards live in more tropical places
The raptors live in more Forest like regions

As for the rest (the ghosts, the humans, the machines, the prototypes) i have no idea where to put them.

I have an idea for race, if it's not too late. They're called "Carniferns", and they're essentially plants which are capable of moving about. They were featured in the game SimEarth as an Easter Egg and could evolve sentience, so maybe that's another type of lifeform which could exist on Therrat.

One subtle thing I like that fictional worlds could do is when they incorporate their own original currency into the mix, like bottlecaps in Fallout, or bits from MLP. It'd be especially nice if they didn't conform to the values of generic currency from the real world (unlike say, Pokedollars from Pokemon which really is just the Japanese Yen for the most part if you do the math.)

For the machine people what if we split it up into two groups, automatons and androids? The automatons are basically clockwork people who use magic as a fuel source or have magic involved with their creation, whereas androids are just really advanced technology.

You Are Reading This wrote:

If it isn't rejected, or too late, here's my idea for a race; Urqaylids. An insect-people (not insect worshipers) based on spiders, and are militant carnivores. If you're interested, ask me more about them.

Like, they inhabit the same area as the scorpion people but are much more savage where as the scorpions are more civilized.

TripleA9000 wrote:

Not 'militant' as in filthy tribals riding to Valhöll all shiny and chrome, but as a people of conquest. They may exhibit more…disturbing aspects compared to the unnamed scorpion people, if you wish.

IN this fictional world, all the races each look like a specific meme and their culture is modeled around said meme. There is a great council where every mod is a world leader and the four admins are Gods (and the fifth admin that nobody talks about is a dead God). The website cities were coded by the God of Technomancy, Brad. All living memes were forged by the God of Memes, Don. The knowledge of the world was both made and kept hidden by the God of Secrets, James, since he never really talks and memers are in general pretty ignorant. And finally the ties that bind all life and material together were forged by the God of Relationships, Ari Spool.

Each world leader mod smokes weed every day and blows the smoke to the admins on high, and they ruthlessly battle for social and political dominance through bad jokes and insults. And once in a while, the son of the four gods descends from Heaven to teach the mods of proper behavior. And his name is Epyc Wyn.

For Epyc Wyn is all memes, codes, secrets, and relationships rolled into one living being. He holds dominion as leader of the Awesome Face nomads, a glorious people that rides around the lands on the backs of giant dragon camels with the heads of a rare pepes that breathes dank memes.

And Epyc said: "And it was dank. Also fuk da popo 420 blaze it."

But as the prophecy says, when the moon and sun align on the dankest day of fire nation history, a crown of hateful threads will be donned on Epyc and his karma shall run red with hate. And on that day he will be the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all mods.

Also King K. Rool is confirmed for smash bros and goes on to become the most powerful ruler in all the meme lands.

So, ignoring Epyc's suggestion, how advanced should we make humans. Like mass effect advanced, or near future advanced like robocop or Advanced Warfare.

You Are Reading This wrote:

With Epyc's suggestion retconned, I think we could make them Advanced Warfare-advanced. Give some reasonable balances to both the tech side and the magic side. Was my suggestion about the Urqaylids good?

Yeah, the idea is pretty solid.

I just felt like writing so I loosely summarized what you have itt so far and filled in some blanks a little.

In inverse Earth world Therrát, only 29% of the surface is water. Over billions of years, this has left the current atmosphere heavy in carbon dioxide and the land rich for growing. Therrát is currently experiencing a green explosion. Trees and plants rapidly grow to enormous proportions; this makes materials such as cotton and wood both plentiful and renewable, while agriculture and food production are well-established in all communities.

Evolution has also taken place inversely. Mammals, notably primates, were among the first animals to evolve. At this time in the planet's history, a moderately sized astronomical object invaded the atmosphere and struck a region inhabited primarily by nearly a quarter of the early human's population. The visibly marked survivors were ostracized from humanity, assumed to be infected by unearthly disease, though they soon discovered their newly imbued magical abilities and turned their backs on the society that had abandoned them. As they spread out and adapted to new regions, they began to take on avian, reptilian, and arthropod traits where necessity demanded. Millions of years later, arthropod traits are the latest to evolve and remain comparatively basic. Arthropod races are currently known more for their physical strength than intellect. Fully aquatic species have yet to evolve, though there are small populations of amphibious races beginning to establish their populations.

Relations between races are stressed. The ostracized magician races still harbor bitter resentment towards pure humans. Not all are content to leave the past in the past, so the humans have developed magic-imbued technology powered by minerals mined out of the ancient crash site's aftermath in order to counter aggressors. In their continued research, humans inadvertently created a viral lifeform that has recently proven resistant to magic, a much-needed discovery for the increasingly threatened human race. There are peaceful factions from all regions which seek a universal system of trade and improved relations. They are currently attempting to implement a currency to replace the current risky barter system, which is often quite dangerous across the loosely established borders although necessary as each region produces unique goods and desirable raw materials.

More info needed about the specifics of magic in this world.

Nice

I wouldn't say anyone group is antagonistic. I was thinking we go for a warhammer type feel, where every races are just huge douche bags to each other.
