X Journalists would make claims of people like Anita Sarkeesian "playing video games all her life" when she openly admitted many times she is not a gamer and only starter recently (when it wasn't for an interview). Various developers trading sex or money for good reviews got exposed, journalists who accepted got exposed. People became a bit more critical about supporting a game just because the developer has a victim complex stating tat their game could have only failed because of sexism, instead of their own poor developing skills. What really sealed the deal was opposition often faking their own harassment. Anita sarkeesian and Zoe Quinn have been caught multiple times screenshotting "harassment" while showing that the harrasser's account name in the login. The video, which would be right at home on PBS in tone if not content, suggested that many mainstream games represent women as accessories and shorthan rather than as humans, a viewpoint that generated swit and unrelenting rage The attack on Sarkeesian was among a number ot incidents in the last few weeks that exposed some of the ugly (yet familiar) attitudes and prejudices that remain deeply ingrained in the gaming culture. This time, those sentiments have gotten tied up in ethical arguments in an attempt to highlight the toxic behavio A lie gets halfway around the world The tide of abuse first surged over Zoe Quinn, creator of the game Depression Quest, who got a deluge of negative atention, abuse, threats, and harassment over a blog post written about her by an ex-boyfriend that was published August 16. The post, composed of narcissistic analysis mixed in with screenshots of several online conversations, exposed many personal details about Quinn irrelevant to her profession or professional conduct Details from the post were quickly spun into a conspiracy. Based on the lone fact of Quinn's relationship with one Kotaku writer, Nathan Grayson, who quoted her once in an article and never covered or reviewed her game, rumors circulated that Quinn had "alleged affairs with video game jounalists" which innuenced coverage of her game. There is no evidence to support this assertion, and the only fact that it's based on-that Quinn began a relationship with Grayson some time after he quoted her in an article and never published anything about her again disproves it. The other two people named in the post are a sound designer and Quinn's boss, who do not work in gaming Yet the accusations went on, along with doxoxing and hacking of Quinn's information and accounts. The onslaught continued with assertions that Quinn made up the harassment, that she used devious womanly wiles to get her (free) game some coverage, and that she portrayed herself as a victim to receive donations. Around August 17, Phil Fish, the creator of Fez, tried to step in and defend Quinn. After he received pushback, Fish threatened to cancel unnamed projects. Fish then said he had his Twitter and Dropbox accounts hacked and e-mail accounts, passwords, and banking information published in response to his defense. Fish shamed those who were attacking Quinn on his Twitter account: "All you people attacking Zoe are cowards. Attacking a woman the easiest way you can. Despicable cowards, all of you" Fish followed by announcing his Fez IP was fo sale because he "want[ed] out" of the gaming industry. Women as background decoration Then came the vicious attacks on Sarkeesian and her video series, which looks at how women are portrayed and used in everything from AAA titles to indies. The video includes examples from games like Watch Dogs, where the main character watches multiple instances of violent domestic abuse and, rather than take even a second look at the woman who suffers it, is required to amble off and track down the man who did it Women as Background Decoration Part 2-Tropes vs Women in Video Games Sarkeesian's videos, which are extremely well-researched and insightful, always draw a measure of harassment and abuse from the stereotypical gamers, who are typically vitriolic toward issues of diversity. This time, the video reached all the way to the likes of Joss Whedon and Tim Schafer. The amplified message eamed Sarkeesian an avalanche of threats, including r---, death, and ham to her familly. Sarkeesian ultimately left her home and reported the threats to the police. "I'm safe. Authorities have been notified. Staying with friends tonight," she wrote on Twitter early Wednesday Enough outiets have, by now, highlighted the profound irony that one woman who dared point out some of the misogyny in video games was so deluged by misogynistic threats over how there is no misogyny in video games that she was driven into hiding. Quinn's story lacked entirely in irony instead it was just a good old-fashioned example of a woman's personall life used to infict professional damage, despite the fact that those two things are not related at all. Many of the people slagging off Sarkeesian and Quinn bind their arguments up in bigger issues, saying that Quinn's situation shines light on ethical quandaries in games and gaming journalism, and I usually don't share the really scary stuff But it's important for folks to know how bad it gets [TRIGGER WARNING where "social justice warriors" "cherry-pick evidence to undermine the massive business and culture of video games, rightfully owned by a particular kind of white man. All of the tertiary accusations against Quinn (that she invented attacks or abuse) are aimed to discredit her. The mud isn't sticking, which is why the frequency and hysteria of these claims is going through the roof. The wrong tools are being deployed, in a misunderstanding of what victory looks like. To #GamerGate supporters, the withdrawal of sponsorship from Intel on Gamasutra, a games news website which published hateful rhetoric about its own audience, was a huge win. Despite universal condemnation from the press, Intel has stuck to its guns and will not advertise on Gamasutra for the foreseeable future, Good on them. wringing liberal media in all of this And that's the essence of the problem for the hand-v The polite, insistent, fact-based and entirely reasonable concerns of GamerGate are invulnerable to scrambling, desperate, politically illiterate and completely absurd attempts to paint the movement as a misogynistic, right-wing lobby group. It isn't one, and advertisers know it. All you accomplish when you tell brazen falsehoods about a sizeable group of disgruntled consumers is make them even more determined to punish you for the contempt you have shown them. That is what's happening with each new wave of ideological garbage, such as this ludicrous summary of GamerGate by Gawker today, a fact-free screed penned by someone suspended for plagiarism. So extreme are the contortions through which the weakened, social media-obsessed media has to put itself in order to slam legitimate concerns about press ethics, we now have the spectacle of Gawker apparently claiming that there's nothing wrong with journalists who financially support the people they write about and reporting, contrary to the facts, that Intel had reversed its position on Gamasutra when it has do o such thing Developers and studios themselves aren't thanking journalists for pretending that GamerGate is some sort of lea Party conspiracy. All the press is doing, say sources im the industry, is driving a wedge between themselves and the people who make games - leaving ournalists ever more isolated and vulnerable in a world where more people trust self-employed YouTubers to make games recommendations than trust professional reviewers. It's a terrible strategy Advertising rates are surely set to plummet, as developers and studios object to outright lies being told about their own customers by journalists who have nothing in common with ordinary gamers and who, in many cases, actively despise their own readers, use every opportunity to poke fun at them, take the word of liars over their own common sense and on ideological crusade against people whose politics they don't like But you can't fight a war of factual disclosures with attacks on character - something you'd expect journalists to instinctively understand. Perhaps the people these blogging hipsters hang out with, in cringeworthy San Francisco neo-speakeasies, respond to the mere mention of the word "conservative" with the same horror the wannabe journalists do But ordinary consumers - the gamers on whose continuing interest gaming publications utterly depend - aren't impressed. Just how stupid do Polygon and Kotaku think their readers are? Do they really believe that EA, Bungie, Capcom and the like don't already know exactly what their customers are like? Do they think that their discredited and widely derided publications are going to change a single mind not already determined t hate gamers for the mere crime of being white men? For the media, GamerGate is an opportunity to sneer and bully from the safety of venture- funded ivory towers. But that battle has already been lost: the smear tactics failed. Now r #GamerGate supporters, this is a war for the soul of the games industry. Gamers do care any more that these journalists hate them. They're fighting a war they intend to win a war that simply doesn't require positive headlines to succeed. These game journalists have colluded with each other and the makers of the products they review for their own profit and in order to promote a fringe movement of "social justice warriors Instead of reviewing games based on merit, they are reviewing them based on their personal connection and this strange political stance WHY DOES ANY OF THIS REALLY MATTER? Even if you do not play video games regularly it is highly likely your children or grand children play videogames for the majority of their spare time. Quality games are an enrich ing experience and greatly aid the development of the brain. They can also tell a story and are an important part of our collective culture Along with their corruption, these journalists have decided to condemn any game that does not adhere to their personal ideology. They collude as a clique to ensure that these games do not rank well. This leads to a poorer experience for otherwise uninformed gamers and parents who purchase games for their children BUT WHY HAVEN'TI HEARD ABOUT THIS? The moment the scandals began to break out many popular gaming publications ran stories stating that “Gamers were dead". This led to an uprising with many Gamers calling this out as both a horrendous declaration and further evidence of collusion! The response was mass censorship, with 32,000 comments being deleted on a popular site called "reddit" and most gaming forums shutting their door to any discussion of the matter. This prompted the famous actor Adam Bawldin to coin the name and hashtag #GamerGate in order to organize discussion of the scandal on the popular social medium twitter SO, WHAT CANIDO TO HELP? All concerned people with access to social media an join us on twitter by searching the hashtag /came rGate. we are arranging a boycott of the corrupt publications and we actively expose the politically charged review process that they employ when reviewing games.
