In 2025, the hashtag "#TikTokRefugees" went viral on American social media, and the Chinese social networking app Rednote aka Xiaohongshu. Several TikTokers began downloading and posting on the largely Chinese Instagram alternative, ahead of the U.S. Supreme Court passing judgment on whether to ban TikTok domestically. Posts of American and Chinese social media users interacting for the first time began making the rounds online on January 13th, 2025.
