He completed three times as many tasks as the rest of the team. The best algorithm specialist had no ability to work in a team. His sense of self-importance was off the charts. The best administrator rarely bathed, and his house was a mess. Female colleagues complained about his odor. The top managers held a meeting to address the issue, but it didn't help. The best programmer, who could write in any programming language, was a notorious womanizer and alcoholic. He only worked at night. But I can't recall a single problem he couldn't solve. There was also a great support engineer I knew who left to join a monastery and became a monk (yes, really). And a talented designer who didn't know how to organize files on his computer. He kept thousands of files in the root directory of his "C" drive. (Yes, files - this was before Figma existed.) I could count on these people in the most difficult situations. Working with them was easy. The takeaway: You can't change a grown person. You can't change their character or bad habits. If you want to set yourself apart in this market, you have to do more than that. If you want to truly stand out, truly be unforgettable... send a ransom note. Make sure it's hand written(by the person you have temporarily acquired possession of) and have it delivered via certified mail, requiring a signature. Boom, immediate feedback. Coltin Caverhill • 3rd+ Engineering Manager at Yelp 4d. • + Follow Managers, be very careful what you say to your engineers! I commented in a slack thread. It was a simple comment of "I wish we had feature X". I thought I was being fun. I thought it would get emoji responses and we would move on. The engineers solved it. Do you know how much we pay Software Engineers!? I did not mean for them to work on this thing and solve my issue. But they wanted to make things better, and if the manager points out an issue, they felt like it should be solved. This was not a big deal, and not a ton of time was spent, but it was a good reminder for me that I am not an engineer, I am a manager. And while that title is mostly meaningless to me, it means something to others. What I say magically holds more gravity not because of the merit of the statement, because of the title I hold.
