Yes, I am that obsessed with my work. And I wouldn't have it any other way, because the obsession that me and my team have with education is the not-so-secret sauce that powers Subject. I bet that this will feel relatable to a lot of builders and founders: If you don't want to do your work on the weekends, you're not truly obsessed with it, which means you'll have a harder time going that extra mile required to achieve success. Take my brother for example. I initially hired him at Subject because he's super talented and smart. But his passions show up differently. He's a hobbyist, ready to clock out at 5pm to go rock climb or skateboard - and that's just not our culture at all. I wanted my brother, Daniel Vilardo, to be happy and successful - by his definition, not ours. So he moved on from Subject and now he's crushing it in his new career. I'm thrilled for his success Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong whatsoever with pursuing hobbies or work-life balance. But his interests and work-style preferences just didn't make him a great fit for our education-obsessed team. Our team loves work like it's our favorite hobby. I'm cool with stating this bluntly because we're based in a city of 10 million people. We can be honest about seeking out 20 obsessives from that 10 million, and leaving the other hobbyists to enjoy their own interests. It was a simple comment of "I wish we had feature X". I thought I was being fun. I thought it would get emoji responses and we would move on. The engineers solved it. Do you know how much we pay Software Engineers!? I did not mean for them to work on this thing and solve my issue. But they wanted to make things better, and if the manager points out an issue, they felt like it should be solved. This was not a big deal, and not a ton of time was spent, but it was a good reminder for me that I am not an engineer, I am a manager. And while that title is mostly meaningless to me, it means something to others. What I say magically holds more gravity not because of the merit of the statement, because of the title I hold. If they say nothing, I know they will not enforce even the most fundamental dress code. I cannot work in such chaos. If they tell me to put them back on, I know conformity reigns in this workplace, and my creativity will suffer. I cannot work there. If they tell me to put one sock and shoe on, I know they value balance and compromise. Only then will I work there.
