At our intern orientation, I got an interesting question: + Follow "Private equity firms have a bad reputation for buying companies, stripping them down and firing everyone. Our mission at Aux Insights is to create more value by helping businesses grow. How do you balance that with PE's slash-and- burn approach?" My answer: While there may be a few “bad actor" PE firms, this narrative is mostly driven by the media. Most PE firms are looking to add value and they know you can't "Cut your way to growth." But truthfully, companies get bloated. They have 100 people doing the job that 25 people can do. PE firms aren't "churning and burning." Reducing headcount IS a form of value creation. They reduce costs or reallocate expenses. That creates value. Such a good question. I love intern season! 15

It was a simple comment of "I wish we had feature X". I thought I was being fun. I thought it would get emoji responses and we would move on. The engineers solved it. Do you know how much we pay Software Engineers!? I did not mean for them to work on this thing and solve my issue. But they wanted to make things better, and if the manager points out an issue, they felt like it should be solved. This was not a big deal, and not a ton of time was spent, but it was a good reminder for me that I am not an engineer, I am a manager. And while that title is mostly meaningless to me, it means something to others. What I say magically holds more gravity not because of the merit of the statement, because of the title I hold. If they say nothing, I know they will not enforce even the most fundamental dress code. I cannot work in such chaos. If they tell me to put them back on, I know conformity reigns in this workplace, and my creativity will suffer. I cannot work there. If they tell me to put one sock and shoe on, I know they value balance and compromise. Only then will I work there.

If it wasn't made I would disqualify them immediately. A messy bed is the sign of a messy house and a messy house is not the type of culture that we are trying to build at Hover However, if the bed was made and they had a duvet with a duvet cover, I would hire them on the spot with a $10,000 bonus. That is the type of preparation and personality we want to hire. Hiring has evolved, and now some candidates use Al to make their bed, so I can no longer use that strategy. Sure, you might not be looking for a new role right now, but what if the worst happens? What if you get laid off? What if the company closes? Taking 30 minutes to chat with a recruiter means there is someone out there who is already familiar with your skillset and work experience. Someone who will be on your side as you begin what could otherwise be a daunting job search. Someone who most likely already knows one or two openings you could be a fit for. I know we recruiters get a bad rep, but I really enjoy talking to people regardless of whether or not they are interested in the role I am hiring for. No call ever feels like a waste of time to me (unless the person is an a**hole, in which case I will invent an excuse and hang up). Anyway, that's my take- IMO, candidates have nothing to lose by taking 30 minutes to chat with us, and everything to gain. So I asked him: "Dude, are you okay?" His answer below made me stop feeling sorry for myself whenever I have to work hard. It's like I'm in wrestling season. Do I want to go out? Of course. Do I want to eat pizza? Of course. But I want to win the wrestling tournament more. And I knew that when I committed to a grueling 3 months of weight cutting and competition at the beginning of the season. Every time I have to work a 14 hour day, I see one associate complain and another quit. Instead, I look at it as my opportunity to get ahead. Wrestling season doesn't last forever. This state of work won't last forever. But I'm committed to making partner and that comes first. Am I suggesting you work 100-hour weeks yourself? Absolutely not. This post is for the folks who are CHOOSING to go after something that requires extreme sacrifice that .01% of people achieve: --> Making Partner --> Being the #1 producer at your company --> Taking a startup from zero to IPO If you're trying to do something exceptional, then every second that you spend complaining should be spent reminding yourself that... It's good when it gets hard because that's when other people are dropping out of the race. Otherwise, you should ask yourself. Is the gold medal really worth it? Good morning, it's Monday. It is now very clear that if you work from home, your career is effectively over. Follow You are not visible in the workplace, you are not improving your work-related skills, you are not learning from more senior people about how to navigate and operate within a company. And so your value to a business has stalled. You are never going to get promoted and your job has become nothing more than an hourly output per pound equation. Of course that might suit you if you are in your 50s and just want to earn a bit of money on the side and get a better work-life balance. But if you are in your 20s and 30s, WFH is the absolute death knell for your career. Just as devastatingly, WFH means that your personal development as a human being has effectively stalled too. If you are not spending time around people at work, you lose the ability to connect, to interact and to learn from them. That will cause you to go into a decline and you will become increasingly isolated and introverted, and probably gain a lot of weight. That's great for pharmaceutical companies, who will happily sell you all kinds of weight loss products and anti- depressants. But it is terrible for you as a person. Humans are pack animals. We need connection with other people, and we thrive on each other's enthusiasm, ideas, positivity, and interaction. The creativity and productivity that a team of people can generate compared to someone working on their own is off the scale. It is one plus one equals five. I understand all the arguments against commuting to work. It is boring and laborious and you would much rather spend that time eating chicken nuggets and watching Netflix. I get that. I also understand that some businesses have a toxic work environment. But that is not an excuse to hide away at home – just find yourself another job. For your own sake, please stop thinking that work from home is a good idea, because it is the exact opposite. It is quite literally the worst thing that could ever happen to anyone. And if you don't stop doing it now, one day you will deeply regret it.
