The Identification of Matthew Jason Beddingfield and His Participation in the Capitol Breach On January 6, 2021, while the attack on the Capitol was unfolding, an unprecedented number of posts, pictures, videos, livestreams, and other self-produced cellphone content was being publicly shared across social media across the internet, often by the perpetrators of the attack on the Capitol. Previously unaffiliated private citizens began identifying individuals and groups that attacked law enforcement and breached the Capitol and reporting those leads to the FBI. One such lead identified the defendant in this case, Matthew Jason Beddingfield, a twenty-one-year- old male and a resident of Middlesex, Johnston County, North Carolina. On January 26, 2021, the Metropolitan Police Department released a PDF containing roughly 175 slides of "Persons of Interest in Unrest-Related Offenses." He has felony criminal convictions in Virginia state court for possession of a controlled substance (5/30/2001), robbery (9/20/2001),' and manufacturing a controlled substance and providing for the resale of drugs (two counts, 4/18/2017). He also has a prior felony conviction from the U.S. District Court in Greenbelt, Md., for possession of a firearm after having been convicted of a felony offense (4/13/2006). Id. at 1 46. And he has a Virginia state court misdemeanor conviction for unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia (12/6/2007). Id. at ¶47. Significantly, only three of the defendant's six adult convictions resulted in criminal history points, meaning that his criminal history category of IV arguably understates the severity of his criminal history. Id. at 1¶ 44-52. In addition, in 2009 he was sentenced to 24 months' incarceration for a violation of the conditions of supervised release involving two separate incidents involving police contact, an alleged shooting and vehicle stop, and his unexplained possession of $2000 in cash while inside a vehicle containing half a kilogram of cocaine, a firearm, and another $10,000 in cash. Media reports about his connection with the events of January 6th resulted in many clients severing their ties with him, including individuals, businesses and even organizations in which he held directorial positions. He lost partnerships in which he was an investor and was forced to dilute his interest in these companies. He lost speaking engagements that helped to promote his business. AirBnB no longer allowed him to use their platform. He was discharged as a Lyft driver. He got a letter from TSA Precheck canceling his enrollment in the program. He was harassed on social media and received harassing emails and phone calls (see PSR 175). It became uncomfortable simply walking in his neighborhood. "National Healing"

Among the records that Donald Trump's lawyers tried to shield from Jan. 6 investigators are a draft executive order that would have directed the defense secretary to seize voting machines and a document titled "Remarks on National Healing." POLITICO has reviewed both documents. The text of the draft executive order is published here for the first time. It's not clear who wrote either document. But the draft executive order is dated Dec. 16, 2020, and is consistent with proposals that lawyer Sidney Powell made to the then-president. On Dec. 18, 2020, Powell, former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn, former Trump administration lawyer Emily Newman, and former Overstock.com CEO Patrick Byrne met with Trump in the Oval Office. In that meeting, Powell urged Trump to seize voting machines and to appointher as a special counsel to investigate the election, according to Axios. The order empowers the defense secretary to "seize, collect, retain and analyze all machines, equipment, electronically stored information, and material records required for retention under" a U.S. law that relates to preservation of election records. [...] Additionally, the draft order would have given the defense secretary 60 days to write an assessment of the 2020 election. That suggests it could have been a gambit to keep Trump in power until at least mid-February of 2021. But the draft executive order also cites two classified documents: National Security Presidential Memoranda 13 and 21. The existence of the first of those memoranda is publicly known, but the existence of the second has not been previously reported. NSPM 13 governs the Pentagon's offensive cyber operations. According to a person with knowledge of the memoranda, 21 makes small adjustments to 13, and the two documents are viewed within the executive branch as a pair. The fact that the draft executive order's author knew about the existence of Memorandum 21 suggests that they had access to information about sensitive government secrets, the person told POLITICO.
