A No-Tipping Restaurant | Mildly Interesting | Know Your Meme

NO TIPPING Top Out Café is a no-tipping establishment. We believe that the employer should be responsible for our employee's wages, not the customer. Our employees deserve a wage that they can count on, that's why we start all our staff at a fair and livable wage. Here are some additional reasons for why no tipping: • The employer should be responsible for employees' wages, not the whim of the customer. We do not want to place that expectation on the customer. • Tipping puts a financial boundary between the customer and the employee. In the context of this community, that just feels wrong. We are all drawn to this place for the same reason, and we genuinely want to provide great service at Top Out Café. Tipping can feel awkward and obligatory for the customer, this is not our style. • We are motivated by autonomy, purpose, and being part of positive culture and community. • Tipping can often create competition between employees for the best shifts and highest grossing nights. We simply are not on board with that at all. • Tipping does not fix poor service. Tell us if you have a problem, do not punish someone's salary. • Tipping is super sexist. 70% of all tipped workers are women, who are forced to live on tips and are compelled to tolerate inappropriate behavior to make a living. • We want to create a space for genuine relationships between everyone in this café & bar. We believe that no tipping is a step towards that. If you want to show your appreciate for our food, beverages, or service - bring your glasses back up to the buss station when you are done, tell your friends about the good time you had, leave us a positive review on yelp, follow us at @topoutcafe on Instagram, or - and I know this sounds flippant - just tell us what you liked. It really does make us feel good in a way a tip never will.
