About
Why So Many in the Radical Left Participate in Speedrunning refers to a thread by Twitter user @bronzeswords in which he attempts to make an argument about why speedrunning video games is a "leftist" hobby. In the thread, he argues that speedrunning is an expression of the political left's lack of work ethic and is an attempt to "elevate alternative sexual archetypes in the marketplace," citing Jordan Peterson theory on sexuality. The thread was widely mocked in numerous ways on social media.
Origin
On October 16th, 2021, Twitter user @bronzeswords[1] posted a fifteen-tweet-long thread outlining his theory as to why, in his view, "so many in the radical left participate in speedrunning." Over the course of the thread, he argues that the political left has a lack of work ethic, thus prioritizes "going fast" over "doing it right." This would promote a communist point of view that work is easy, comparing speedrunning to the fully-automated luxury gay space communism meme (example tweets shown below).
He then digresses into discussing how speedrunning is a means for the "radical left" to elevate an "alternative sexual archetype" in the "marketplace," citing Jordan Peterson theory. He argues that people like Elon Musk are traditionally seen as the most desirable type of mate for being "innovators," and speedrunners are attempting to elevate "speed" as a desirable alternative to "innovation."
Spread
The tweet was widely mocked on Twitter, racking up a 6,000-840 quote-tweet-to-retweet ratio in the span of four days. Twitter user @Turbojehtt posted a video parodying the thread, imagining it as the ideology of Shadow the Hedgehog, gaining over 570 retweets and 2,800 likes (shown below, top). User @thetruesand posted a video of Duke Nukem saying, "wow that's a lot of words, too bad I'm not reading them," gaining over 120 retweets and 1,800 likes (shown below, bottom).

Several elements of the thread inspired jokes on Twitter and Reddit, including @bronzeswords' use of the term "Petersonian" to describe Jordan Peterson theory and the phrase "alternative sexual archetypes ('fastest mario')." User @fransiscobegbie[2] posted a Milk Edinburgh parody with the text, gaining over 150 retweets and 3,100 likes (shown below, left). Redditor gungas134[3] posted a Don't Worry Baby, He's Just A Nerd! parody to /r/GamingCircleJerk, gaining over 6,900 points (shown below, right).
