Origin

In the Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith video game, released April 2nd, 2005,^[1] a Clone Trooper confronts Obi-wan Kenobi with the sentence "I'm sorry, sir. We are no longer required to follow your orders" (shown below).

The first use of the scene as a reaction image occurred March 9th, 2018, when Redditor Hunter11725 posted it in /r/PrequelMemes.^[2]

Spread

On December 8th, 2018, a template for the meme was uploaded to /r/MemeTemplatesOfficial^[3] by a deleted Reddit user. Scenarios involving students and teachers are commonly used as captions for the image. For example, on January 29th, 2021, Redditor junior-echo-2077 posted such an example to /r/PrequelMemes^[4] (shown below, right).

A similar scene from the Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith film, in which a clone trooper says "I'm sorry sir, it's time for you to leave" has seen similar use as the Revenge Of The Sith game meme. On December 12th, 2018, a deleted Reddit user posted such an example to /r/PrequelMemes,^[5] gaining over 3,000 points (shown below, left).
