Vergil Status refers to bait-and-switch videos that end with a scene from Devil May Cry 5 showing Vergil performing a combo while "Bury The Light" plays in the background. It is an offshoot of the Revengeance Status meme.

Origin

On February 25th, 2021, Twitter^[1] user @SunhiLegend uploaded a clip of Vergil performing a combo in Devil May Cry 5. The tweet received more than 8,000 retweets and 27,000 likes in nearly two years. The next day, YouTube^[2] user Awonddy uploaded @SunhiLegend's video with the track "Bury The Light." The video received more than 12.3 million views (shown below).

Spread

Starting in 2022, Awonddy's clip began seeing use in bait-and-switch videos. For example, on June 19th, 2022, YouTube^[3] user SgenSN uploaded a video titled "Vergil Status" showing Overwatch characters before transitioning into the Vergil clip. The video received more than 529,000 views in six months (shown below, left). On August 24th, 2022, YouTube^[4] user SigmaMale uploaded a similar video using Genshin Impact characters. The video received more than 1 million views in four months (shown below, right).
