Tifa Lockhart is a major character in the Final Fantasy VII series. One of the most recognizable characters from the Final Fantasy series, Tifa Lockhart is widely regarded a waifu and has inspired a great amount of fan art, memes, discussions, hornyposting and controversies, such as Tifa's Breast Size Change and Italian Senate Tifa.

Origin

On January 31st, 1997, role-playing video game Final Fantasy VII, the seventh main installment in the Final Fantasy series was released by Square Enix. ^[1] In the game, character Tifa Lockhart,^[2] a reserved and emphatic martial artist and a childhood friend of the protagonist Cloud Strife, is introduced (images shown below)

Tifa is a reserved but empathetic person who often acts as a motherly figure towards her allies. A 20-year-old bar manager and a martial artist, Tifa is a childhood friend of the protagonist Cloud Strife, whom she grew up with in Nibelheim. Upon meeting Cloud again, Tifa convinces him to join Avalanche to fight the Shinra Electric Power Company, and then supports him and his allies in their fight against Sephiroth.

Tifa appeared as a supporting character in the 2006 video game Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII for PlayStation 2 and in the 2007 video game Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII and for PlayStation Portable.

On April 10th, 2020, Final Fantasy VII Remake, a remake of the 1997 game, was released (release trailer shown below).^[3]

In 2022, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth a sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake was announced,^[4] with Tifa set to appear in the game as one of the playable characters.

Fandom

Tifa Lockhart has been one of the most popular and recognizable from the final Final Fantasy series and jRPG genre in general, and is generally recognized as one of the earliest video game waifus. The character has been a popular subject of fan art and hornyposting online. For example, as of June 2023 art website DeviantArt^[5] had over 116,600 submissions tagged "tifa" (examples shown below). The NSFW art website Rule 34 had over 24,000 works with the tag "tifa lockhart."^[6]

Tifa's Breast Size Change

Tifa's Breast Size Change refers to a debate around the slight change in the design of Tifa Lockhart. The debate went viral online in June 2019 following the trailer premiere for the then-upcoming remake of the game.

Italian Senate Tifa

Italian Senate Tifa is the name given to an event in which Tifa made an appearance in a lewd video at a livestreamed event in the Italian Senate in early 2022. The video, which was animated in Unreal Engine, was followed up by another video of Xiangling from Genshin Impact. News of the hack went viral shortly after, resulting in widespread media coverage, discussions and memes on social media in January 2022.
