About
Therapy Door vs. Other Door refers to a series of exploitable memes visualizing the Instead of Going to Therapy joke, based on relabeled versions of the Modern Society meme. In the memes, two doors are available for entrance, with a large crowd of people fully ignoring the one labeled "therapy" and lining up or rushing the other door.
Origin
The format is a recaptioned version of the Modern Society meme, also known as Two Doors. The original image, a comic by an unknown author, has been used as a meme format since 2012 (shown below).[1]
On December 30th, 2021, X[2] user @iFinns posted the earliest discovered version of the meme in which the empty door ignored by the crowd was labeled "therapy," a visualization of the Instead of Going to Therapy joke. The post (shown below) received over 300 reposts and 2,300 likes in three years.
Spread
Multiple versions of the meme were posted in 2022 and 2023. For example, on June 2nd, 2023, X[3] user @istankitconnor posted a version of the meme that received over 600 reposts and 3,600 likes in one year (shown below).
The format achieved more popularity in 2024 as another, similar Modern Society template was used for it. On May 1st, 2024, X[4] user @wwxwashere posted the earliest found viral version of the meme based on the alternative template, a meme about Archive of Our Own that received over 10,000 reposts and 45,000 likes in six months (shown below).
More versions of the meme based on both templates went viral in 2024.
