The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live is a spin-off TV miniseries set after the conclusion of the original The Walking Dead show, with Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) and Danai Gurira (Michonne) reprising their roles. Upon release in early 2024, the series was met with mixed, and fairly positive, reviews from both the audience and critics. The Ones Who Live also spawned numerous memes, fan edit videos and fan art referencing it.

History

The series was originally announced on July 22nd, 2022, at San Diego Comic-Con 2022,[1] when Andrew Lincoln's Rick Grimes and Danai Gurira's Michonne revealed they would star in a new spin-off for The Walking Dead scheduled to premiere in 2023. During the event, AMC, the studio behind the franchise, also said the show "presents an epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world." On October 12th, 2023, the show's title (The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live) was revealed[2] alongside a teaser (shown below), which amassed more than 3 million views and 63,000 likes in five months.

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live takes place after the conclusion events of the original series, following Rick and Michonne as they try to reconcile their strong feelings for each other with the difficulties of a world surrounded by zombies. The miniseries premiered[3] on February 25th, 2024, and is expected to run for six episodes.

Reception

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live first episode drew mixed reviews from critics, scoring a 55 score on Metacritic[4] and an 87 score on Rotten Tomatoes[5] based on 87 reviews.

Online Presence

The series was eagerly awaited and commented on by The Walking Dead fans on social media. For example, on November 21st, 2022, X[6] user @dprskj posted a reaction video paired with the caption "Me when I saw Rick and Michonne," which amassed more than 7,000 likes and 1,500 retweets two years. (shown below)

On October 12th, 2023, TikTok[7] user @rusty.ae posted a fancam edit about the series using clips from the show's trailer (shown below, left), which received roughly 1.7 million plays and 220,000 likes in five months. On February 25th, 2024, TikTok[8] uploaded a clip from the series' first episode (shown below, right) showing the main duo Rick and Michonne reuniting, which garnered over 175,000 plays and 12,300 likes in a day.
