About
Succession is an American satire-drama series about the family and employees at the head of WaystarRoy Co., a massive media conglomerate, with the cast vying for a position to take over the company while WaystarRoy's CEO, Logan Roy (Brian Cox), suffers from poor health. The show became a critical and commercial success with a large online fanbase, as people have praised its writing, acting, and music.
History
Succession was created by Jesse Armstrong, who initially conceived of the series as a satire of the real-life Murdoch family.[2] Succession began airing on June 3rd, 2018 (first trailer shown below).[1] The show has since run two seasons, and as of October 18th, 2021, is in the midst of its third.
Reception
Though the series received generally positive reception after its first season,[3] word of mouth and further critical buzz during its second season helped expose the show to more viewers; the first episode gained 580,000 viewers, while the second season finale drew 1.1 million viewers.[4] The second season received a score of 89/100 on Metacritic. Overall, the show's score on Metacritic[3] is 82.
The show has a significant presence in awards shows, with many elements and actors being nominated or winning awards. The show won the 2020 Emmy for Best Drama Series.[5]
Online Presence
Online, the show received a significant fan following. The show's subreddit, created two years before the series aired, has over 54,000 subscribers.[6] The show has also received over 54,000 likes on Facebook.[7]
Succession Theme
The show's theme song, composed by Nicholas Brittell, has been widely praised and used in a number of memes online.
On August 9th, 2019, the soundtrack for the first season of Succession was released on Spotify. This led to a series of parodies in which people edited videos of people dancing to music but with the Succession theme added in. For example, the account for @thewatchpod posted an edited clip of LeBron James dancing to the theme, gaining over 470 retweets and 1,600 likes (shown below).
