About
Snoot Game is a free Ren'Py visual novel fan game of the video game Goodbye Volcano High by the independent video game studio Cavemanon, comprised of an anonymous team of 4chan users. The game was developed in secret by Cavemanon shortly after the announcement of Goodbye Volcano High, and the game was released a year later on June 4th, 2021. The game also received subsequent patches that fixed bugs, finished CGs, and added new content to the game, the most recent patch released on January 6th, 2023. The game proved controversial, as some felt it was high quality while others criticized its writing and the apparent politics of the game, with some arguing that the game's only "good ending" is due to the player romancing the non-binary Fang into deciding she is a woman.
History
Goodbye Volcano High Reveal
Goodbye Volcano High was announced as a part of Sony's PlayStation 5 Game showcase titled "The Future of Gaming," which aired on June 11th, 2020. The game proved controversial online, as some users mocked the character designs and art style of the game, as well as being featured alongside many prolific titles from PlayStation. Many users began to make memes of the game and its characters. Shortly after the game was announced, the game received controversy after it was discovered that the lead writer Kate Gray wrote an article for Kotaku about an unofficial Harry Potter sex parody game, featuring underage characters.
Development of Snoot Game
In the days that followed the reveal and controversy surrounding Goodbye Volcano High, a small group of users on the /v/ board on 4chan decided to make a parody visual novel via Ren'py and began working on it over the next year. Eventually, the first version of Snoot Game was on the /v/ board and subsequently released on June 4th, 2021 via their website and itch.io. However, the release was released in an incomplete state and received various updates to improve the game and add the content that was missing upon release.
The itch.io release for Snoot Game was eventually taken down, presumably due to copyright-related reasons. As a result of Cavemanon's success with Snoot Game, the studio is now working on two new games titled I Wani Hug That Gator! and Exit 665.
Audience Reception
Snoot Game received praise from some players for its writing, art direction and character designs. Many players found the game's storyline emotionally compelling, praising the game's messages of empathy, growth, and discovery, particularly regarding Anon and Fang's character. As a result, the game received a cult following with several Discord servers dedicated to the game, Reddit pages, as well as the presence of fan-created content on sites such as FurAffinity, Twitter, e621, and Archive of Our Own.
Though the game had some positive reception among players, KO_OP responded negatively to the game and claimed that Snoot Game was developed in bad faith and that their views do not align with Cavemanon's. Over a year after Snoot Game's most recent update, news publications including Kotaku[1] and Pink News[2] released articles panning the game, claiming that the game is "alt-right," uses stolen assets and is a "harassment troll project." The endings of the game were a significant point of contention for some players, as the game's "good ending" involves convincing the romance option, Fang, that she is a woman and not non-binary, while the "bad endings" see Fang remaining non-binary and meeting cruel fates.
