Resident Evil 2 Remake is the colloquial title for Capcom's 2019 remake of the 1998 survival horror game Resident Evil 2, a survival horror action game that follows Claire Redfield and Leon Kennedy as they work to contain a zombie outbreak in Raccoon City. The game received high praise upon release.

History

The original Resident Evil 2 was released in 1998. After the success of the first Resident Evil remake for the Gamecube, Capcom considered a similar remake of Resident Evil 2, but it was shelved so creator Shinji Mikami could focus on Resident Evil 4.^[1] The Resident Evil 2 remake was announced in August of 2015^[1] and debuted at E3 2018 (trailer shown below).

The game features the same engine as Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and has eschewed the original's tank controls system for over-the-shoulder camera similar to that of Resident Evil 4.^[2] The game was released on January 25th, 2019 for Xbox One, Playstation 4, and Windows.^[2]

Reception

The game received high praise from many gaming critics. As of January 30th, 2019, the game has a 91/100 on Metacritic.^[3] Critics praised the game's faithfulness to the original while bringing new ideas into the game. Critics also praised the game's effectiveness at blending horror with humor, which has been a staple of the best Resident Evil games.^[4] Telegraph called the game "survival horror perfection," and stated the game would satisfy newcomers and series veterans alike, a compliment shared by other reviewers.

IGN Review

IGN initially gave the game a score of 8.8.^[5] However, the reviewer Daemon Hatfield made an egregious error in reviewing the game. In Resident Evil 2, Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield are separated at the beginning of the game in a car crash. The player chooses which character to play as, which starts the game's "A" campaign. After completing the A campaign, players can play the other character and the B campaign. Hatfield mistakenly finished the A campaign and then played the same campaign from the other character's perspective, resulting in him believing the game's two campaigns had minimal differences. This led to IGN having to strike out large parts of text from Hatfield's review. The error was joked about on Twitter by @UweBollocks, gaining over 1,100 retweets and 3,400 likes (shown below). An inquiry about the error posted to /r/OutOfTheLoop gained over 2,900 points.^[6]

Online Presence

A Facebook page for Resident Evil 2 Remake has over 1,200 likes.^[7] Additionally, Twitter users joked about villainous enemy Mr. X in a variety of meme templates. For example, user @Junker2747 posted an object labeling meme based on a screenshot of the character, gaining over 620 retweets and 1,100 likes (shown below, left). User @simpsonsvgames posted a Simpsons screenshot meant to humorously represent Mr. X, gaining over 240 retweets and 700 likes (shown below, right). These jokes were covered by PC Gamer.^[8]
