About

Gen:Lock is an animated web series created by Gray Haddock starring Michael B. Jordan, Dakota Fanning, and Maisie Williams. The series is a mech-combat show set in a dystopian future. It premiered on Rooster Teeth on January 26th, 2019.

History

Gen:Lock was announced at RTX Austin 2017 and a trailer was released at New York Comic Con later that year.[1] The show was presented as a "grounded science-fiction" show influenced by Gundam and Tom Clancy novels while using the RWBY style.[1] The show is described by RoosterTeeth[3] thus:

Fifty years in the future, an oppressive authoritarian force threatens to conquer the world. A daring team is recruited to pilot a new form of weaponized neuroscience that powers devastating mecha, but they must be willing to sacrifice everything to save the world.

Over the course of 2018, several cast members were announced, including Jordan, Fanning, and David Tennant. The first trailer was released to the web on October 11th, 2018 (shown below).

Additionally, several character teasers were released ahead of the show's debut (examples shown below).

The show premiered in a surprise stream of the first episode on December 22nd, 2018.[2] It premiered properly on January 26th, 2019.[3]

Reception

Reviews for Gen:Lock were mostly positive as critics praised the series' animation, performance, and dialogue.[4][5] However, some reviewers were critical of the series' story which to some came off as unfocused.[6] Most reviewers agreed the characters were the series' strong point.[5][6]

Online Presence

The series has developed a quick following since its debut. Its dedicated subreddit[7] has over 1,900 subscribers as well as a Facebook page[8] with 383 members as of January 28th, 2019.
