About

Deepwoken is a fantasy Roblox experience launched in 2021. The game revolves around difficult combat and exploration. Players can create custom characters and set out to explore a largely oceanic map, with two deaths sending a player to the "Depths" where a player can experience permadeath and reset their character.

History

Deepwoken was created by Vows by the Sea and released on December 20th, 2021.^[1] The open-world game consists largely of open seas, which players can swim, sail across or drown in. The game comes with a stats system, NPC quests, Guilds, Boss monsters like the Primadon and various enemies like Bandit Camps. Players can also choose to fight each other, although this is uncommon.

When a character dies twice, they are sent to the "Depths," an underwater kingdom where players must fight for their lives to return to the main game. Once a player dies in the Deep, the character is reset. Characters also deal with thirst and hunger bars and can use their abilities to engage mechanics like building fires, fishing or crafting.

Online Presence

On December 23rd, 2021, YouTuber^[2] Flamingo posted a video playing Deepwoken, gathering over 2 million plays in two years (seen below, left). On January 22nd, 2022, YouTuber^[3] Tank Fish posted a video about Deepwoken, calling it "a hardcore Roblox permadeath RPG game," and saying that he's been trying to kill Primadon. The video gathered over 4 million views in roughly two years (seen below, right).

On February 3rd, 2022, Redditor^[5] /u/Mountain_Exit4616 posted a Gigachad meme about a player who helps "freshies" or new players escape the Depths, gathering over 900 upvotes in two years. On September 10th, Deepwoken won the Roblox Innovation Award for "Best New Experience"^[4] (seen below, right).

On September 13th, 2023, TikToker^[6] @kiorigaming posted a video joking about how easy Deepwoken is, gathering over 600,000 plays and 12,000 likes in nine months (seen below, left). A video posted by TikToker^[7] @nemesis_taka on March 15th, 2024, gathered over 1 million plays and 58,000 likes in two months. The video showed the user wielding a new weapon in the game (seen below, right).
