About

The Roblox Death Sound (alternatively known as Oof, labeled as Uuhhh in the official sound file, and other interpretations of the noise) is a short, one-second sound clip used in the MMORPG Roblox. Online, the sound effect is notably utilized in various fan remixes of existing scenes and songs from pop culture.

Origin

First appearing in the 2005 beta release of Roblox, the death sound has remained a staple element in the game's 10+ year history. The sound effect triggers when a "Humanoid's" (the character models controlled by players) health reaches zero, out of a base maximum of 100.[1] Since the worlds are crafted primarily by the players, this can be achieved by having the hitboxes assigned to the body parts of a Humanoid struck by tools that are purposefully coded to decrease the health (such as spike traps, or falling into the void of a map, for example). Based on the speed of the humanoid, the sound effect can change. Players would attempt to make their characters move as fast as possible in the hopes of hearing the sound effect drastically pitch-shifted.

Spread

Presumably as a result of the mixed to negative reception surrounding the Roblox fandom, the death sound primarily became subject to a variety of musical remixes in late 2016 when YouTuber Whimee began uploading many variations of the idea, starting with "Super OOF Land," which was later deleted.

Death Sound Instrument/Vocal Conversions

Death Sound Instrument/Vocal Conversions (DSI/VC) refer to the replacing some or every single instrument and voice of a MIDI or normal song with the Roblox death sound (and in some cases, various other sound effects from the game). The earliest known of these DSI/VCs were uploaded to YouTube on March 23rd, 2013, by YouTuber dudesnooze (shown below_.[2]

Following this video, various other YouTubers became involved in making DSI/VCs, the most notable of these being YouTuber SUP3R's All Star edit, surpassing 500,000 views by January 2017.[3]

Death Of Roblox Death Sound

On July 26th, 2022, Roblox announced that it had removed the death sound due to licensing issues. It is unclear what happened to the deal that allowed Roblox to use the sound. The sound was replaced with a similar, default sound effect (shown below).
