About

Castlevania is an American animated cartoon series created and written by Warren Ellis for Netflix. The show is based on a game series of the same name by Konami and follows the story of Trevor Belmont, a vampire hunter in his quest to defeat Vlad Dracula Tepes, who seeks to destroy humanity following the execution of his wife Lisa.

Premise

The show centers around Trevor Belmont, the last living member of the Belmont clan, a disgraced family of monster hunters. After the execution of Vlad Dracula Tepes's wife Lisa, the vampire releases an army of otherworldly beasts that overruns the country. Castlevania's story is originally based on the events from Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, combining elements from other games, such as Symphony of the Night and Curse of Darkness.[1]

History

Netflix first announced the tv series on February 8th, 2017[5] and the first season of Castlevania TV series premiered on Netflix on July 7th, 2017.[2] On May 24th, 2017, Netflix uploaded on YouTube[3] a teaser of the show, which garnered over 3.9 million views and 62,000 likes in six years. (shown below)

The show lasted for four seasons, with the last one premiering on May 13th, 2021. The trailer for the final season was posted on YouTube[4] on April 29th, 2021, receiving over 5 million views and 211,000 likes in two years.

Reception

The series was very well received by critics. Its first season received a 71 score on Metacritic [6] based on four reviews. The second season amassed a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 17 reviews. The third season garnered a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 19 reviews. The fourth and final season received a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 13 reviews, the platform "Critics Consensus" claims the show is "A rewarding experience and bittersweet farewell, Castlevania's fourth season is a triumphant conclusion to an expertly crafted series."

Online Reaction

The series' four decades of videogame material has amassed an expressive and engaged fanbase. Twitter user @paeses[7] complemented the Netflix show's well-animated scenes on July 7th, 2017. The post (shown below) garnered over 12,000 likes and 5,700 retweets in six years.

The artist who drew the opening credits animation above posted on Twitter[8] on November 11th, 2017, a behind-the-scenes of the production process. The post (shown below) garnered over 56,000 likes and 22,000 retweets in six years.

Clips from the show are often used as image macros, reaction images or GIFs on social media. For example, YouTube[9] user @KaiserNeko uploaded a compilation of Castlevania TV series memes on August 5th, 2021. The post (shown below, left) garnered roughly 77,000 views and 5,400 likes in two years. YouTuber[10] uploaded on February 9th, 2019, a video titled "The Castlevania Trio Being Extremely Competent For (Almost) 3 Minutes," which garnered over 1 million views and 42,000 likes in four years.
