About
Burger King "Real" Meals refers to a promotion by Burger King which introduced meals for different moods such as "blue" "pissed" and "DGAF." The promotion, coinciding with Mental Health Awareness Month, prompted jokes from online users.
History
On May 1st, 2019, Burger King announced their "Real" Meals campaign with a video showing several people experiencing sadness or anger before revealing the new meals (shown below). The new meals and the promotion's tagline, "No one is happy all the time," were considered a dig at McDonald's and their famous "Happy Meals."[1] The meals include the Blue Meal, Salty Meal, Yaaas Meal and DGAF Meal and all come with a Whopper, fries, and a drink.
Online Reaction
Online, users reacted to the campaign in a variety of ways. The Takeout[2] wrestled with the fact that Burger King's message was inherently positive but also felt it was weird the brand was attempting to use people's negative emotions to "sell fries." Others were outright supportive of the campaign. Twitter user @Ordyh07 tweeted that they appreciated and respected the campaign (shown below, left). These types of responses were covered by Fox News.[3] Others were less enthusiastic. @ByYourLogic joked that the promotion is the result of a world of "no nu metal, no drywall punching" (shown below, right).
Other popular jokes include a Pagliacci joke by KrangTNelson that gained over 290 retweets and 3,000 likes (shown below, left). User @BrandyLJensen joked about a "catastrophically horny meal" (shown below, right).
