About
Rei Ayanami is a main character from the popular anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion and it's related movies. Rei, as with other characters in the series, is often argued as part of the Best Girl discussion along with Asuka Langley. Since her introduction, Rei has been used extensively in memes referencing NGE, as well as in standalone memes as a character that stands for depression, helplessness, and needing to be fixed or saved from her fate.
Origin
On October 4th, 1995, the first episode of Neon Genesis Evangelion was released, with Rei being a focal point of the episode. Rei is first shown in the scene that would later become the meme Get In The Fucking Robot Shinji, in which a very damaged Rei is shown which causes Shinji to pilot the Unit 01.
