Pretzels Is The Same refers to an exploitable image taken from The Eric Andre Show in which Hannibal Buress reviews various pretzel brands, concluding that they're all similar and saying "Pretzels is the same." It became an exploitable in which people compare various things that are similar and write "X is the same."
Origin
On October 10th, 2013, Hannibal Buress reviewed pretzels in a segment on The Eric Andre Show (shown below).[1] After trying a couple, he says "These are all pretty good. What is this segment? Pretzels is the same?"
Spread
On May 25th, 2014, Tumblr user gamera7[3] reblogged pictures of Buress as a child and an adult looking similar, adding the caption "pretzels is the same" (shown below, left). On December 28th, 2014, Tumblr user ghoulgoblin520[2] uploaded GIFs of the scene, gaining over 124,000 notes (shown below, right).
Over the following years, several popular examples of the meme appeared on Tumblr. For example, a photoset by ohdoubleyoo[3] compared the protagonists of several sports animes, gaining over 23,000 notes (shown below, left). A post by eggzaki[4] reblogged a post comparing the works of abstract painter Jackson Pollock with a "Pretzels is the same edit" gaining over 22,000 notes (shown below, right).
