About
Nah I'd Win refers to a frame in the manga series Jujutsu Kaisen (JJK) in Chapter 221 in which the character Satoru Gojo says the phrase "Nah, I'd win." The frame was re-translated by various manga sites like VIZ which changed it from "No" to "Nah, I'd win" to match a callback to Chapter 3. The frame became an exploitable in late 2023, as in, meme creators recaptioned the speech bubble and also replaced Gojo with different characters from JJK and elsewhere, referencing other anime, cartoons and subcultures. For instance, a notable replacement featured the JJK character Jogo. The Nah I'd Win meme trended en masse on TikTok and Reddit, peaking in November 2023.
Origin
On April 23rd, 2023, Chapter 221 of Jujutsu Kaisen was released on VIZ,[1] among other websites, like links shared on the /r/JuJutsuKaisen[2] subreddit on the same day. On April 24th, X[3][4] user @lightning446 highlighted in a thread that the last page in the manga (shown below, left) was translated into English differently by varying translators and websites. As stated by @lightning446[4] and users on Reddit,[5] VIZ quickly corrected its translation of the last page from reading "No" to reading "Nah, I'd win" (shown below, right). Another English translation of the chapter's last page read "I will win."[6]
As reiterated by X[4] user @lightning446 in their thread, the page was corrected to fit a quote from Chapter 3 of Jujutsu Kaisen[7] in which Gojo said to the character Yuji "Nah, I'd win" (shown below).
On April 25th, 2023, Reddior Soft-Comfort-7474 posted a side-by-side comparison of all three English translations to the /r/Jujutsufolk[8] subreddit, asking, "Which one do you prefer?" gaining over 770 upvotes in seven months (shown below).
In the comments of the /r/Jujutsufolk[8] post, an initial slew of memes that re-edited the frame surfaced, like one comment posted by Redditor[9] A_Cleanly_Casual that replaced the words with "Nuh Uh," gaining over 600 upvotes in seven months (shown below, left). Similar re-edits were posted by Redditors[10][11] in the comment section (shown below, center and right).
Spread
In late 2023, redraws and re-edits of the frame surfaced en masse online. For instance, on October 6th, 2023, X[12] user @Vihurah shared a colored redraw with the JJK character Jogo, gaining over 950 likes in one month (shown below, left).
In November 2023, "Nah, I'd Win" memes surfaced en masse on TikTok, evident in a slideshow posted by TikToker[13] @tesorog on November 8th, which had a re-edit with the "Nah, I'd Win" bubble saying "Nah, I'd Win," gaining roughly 512,700 plays and 97,700 likes in one day (shown below, right).
The aforementioned meme from TikTok[13] earned viral reposts on Reddit[14] and Twitter / X[15] soon after its upload. During the same timeframe, video memes surfaced that were a part of the trend. For instance, on November 8th, 2023, TikToker[16] @kuzi.__ posted a stylized video compilation of many "Nah I'd Win" memes, receiving over 72,900 likes in one day (shown below).
