About
Multifandom refers to a slang term used on the internet in Fandom and Stan communities to describe the practice of being invested or interested in multiple fan communities at once. The term began as a colloquial way to differentiate "multifandom" blogs and conventions from those dedicated to a single piece of media or artist. In 2023, X users debated the use of the term "multifandom," with some criticizing the seeming need to define the act of having multiple interests.
Origin
Use of the term "multifandom" can be traced to the 2000s, with a 2006 collection of essays about internet fan fiction using the term to describe FanFiction.net, calling it a "multifandom archive."[1]
In November 2008, Fanlore.com created a wiki page for the term "multifandom," distinguishing it from crossovers and multi-media art.[2] Fanlore also traces the origins of the term to the word "multimedia." In the mid-2010s, use of the term "multifandom" to describe the practice of following more than one K-Pop group or idol became commonplace.[3]
Multifandom edits on YouTube grew popular in the early 2010s, with YouTuber[4] ppplily posting a video titled, "Raise Your Glass – Multifandom," on February 3rd, 2011. The video contained edited footage from various television shows. The post gathered over 200,000 views in 12 years (seen below, left). YouTuber[5] yotb0ka posted a multifandom video to YouTube on October 21st, 2011, titled, "Multifandom Males – S&M [Collab]" The video gathered over 2 million plays in 12 years (seen below, right).
