Kirby Fishing refers to a scene from the trailer for Kirby and the Forgotten Land showing Nintendo character Kirby sitting waterside with a fishing pole and hat. Upon release of the trailer in early 2022, the scene sparked a wave of fan art and image macros using Kirby fishing as an exploitable in memes.

Origin

The trailer to Kirby and the Forgotten Land was posted to YouTube and Twitter by Nintendo on January 12th, 2022.^[2][1] The video showed off the game's co-op abilities as well as some mini-games, including a fishing minigame that has Kirby sitting in a folding chair while holding a fishing rod and wearing a bucket hat (shown below).

Spread

The moment quickly inspired jokes about the scene. For example, On January 12th, 2022, Twitter user TannithArt^[3] posted an edit of the moment featuring other Nintendo characters fishing next to Kirby, gaining 19 retweets and 68 likes in nine days (shown below, left). On January 14th, Redditor Trovao2004 posted a parody Super Smash Brothers Ultimate tier list about characters in the game as they related to fishing, putting the Kirby cast in their own tier, to /r/SmashBrosUltimate.^[4] The post gained over 120 points in one week (shown below, right).

Others posted fan art based on the moment. For example, Twitter user @elzrydo^[5] posted art that gained 9 retweets and 28 likes (shown below, left). User @astronomic727^[6] posted art of Kirby fishing and sleeping next to a Waddle Dee, gaining over 60 retweets and 270 likes (shown below, right).
