JISOO Flower Dance Challenge

The JISOO Flower Dance Challenge or the Flower Challenge refers to a dance challenge where participants mirror a move performed by K-pop artist JISOO in her music video for "Flower" where she holds her arms forward, wrist-to-wrist, then spins her hands in alternating circles while swaying her hips, somewhat resembling a flower. The trend was popularized on TikTok beginning in April 2023 and inspired both dance videos and challenge videos, including videos where people do the flower move with their pet's head in their hands. It also inspired animations on YouTube.

Origin

On March 31st, 2023, the music video for "Flower," a song by K-pop artist JISOO of Blackpink fame, was released on the Blackpink YouTube^[1] channel, garnering over 269 million views in two months (shown below). Around the 1:04 mark, JISOO does a dance where she holds her arms in front of her, wrist-to-wrist, then spins her hands in alternating circles while swaying her hips.

On April 3rd, the @blackpink TikTok^[2] page, @bp_tiktok, posted a video of JISOO doing the dance, writing in the description, "Dance with #ME 🌺" garnering over 68 million views in two months (shown below).

The original sound for "Flower" was used over 3.1 million times over the following months by both Korean and North American TikTokers and other K-pop stars. Participants in the trend mirror the dance, sometimes in full, and other times just the flower hands move. On April 4th, K-pop artist Rosé posted a video to TikTok^[3] doing the dance, garnering over 201 million views in two months (shown below, left). On April 5th, TikToker^[4] @antonio_ipiz posted an animation of a cockroach doing the dance, garnering over 114 million views in the same span of time (shown below, right).

Some TikTokers also started performing a challenge with their pets where they put their pets' heads between their wrists and do the flower dance around them. For example, on April 8th, TikToker^[5] @kobi_jrt posted a video like this that gained over 38.7 million views in two months (shown below).

The trend also inspired animations on TikTok and YouTube where characters from various fandoms do the flower challenge. On April 21st, YouTuber^[6] Fuwari posted a Demon Slayer animation where someone does the challenge around Nezuko's head, garnering over 7.2 million views in just over a month (shown below, left). On May 5th, YouTuber^[7] Jeny_Punker posted a Roblox Doors animation referencing the trend, garnering over 5 million views in a month (shown below, right).
