About

The Ice Spice Twerk, also known as Ice Spice's Signature Move, refers to Bronx drill rapper Ice Spice (known for her lyrics "You thought I was feelin' you?" in her song "Munch") and her habit of twerking while putting her hand up underneath her crotch on stage and in videos. The mannerism inspired memes on TikTok and elsewhere as users joked about Ice Spice doing the twerk amid any, everyday activity or task for no apparent reason other than to thirst trap mid-concert performance, spawning the "How Ice Spice Does X" phrasal template.

Origin

Ice Spice most notably solidified her "signature move" in her music video for the song "No Clarity," uploaded to Youtube^[1] on November 6th, 2021. At the 1:29-minute mark, Ice Spice demonstrates her move, putting her hand up under herself mid-twerk (shown below). Over the course of one year, the video earned roughly 4.6 million views. Additionally, Ice Spice's "No Clarity" gained her attention in memes for the first time, mostly due to her lyrics, "We both from the Bronx, so I know that you dirty."

The concept of Ice Spice twerking started to manifest on Twitter^[2] in April 2022 in the replies to Ice Spice's music video tweets. However, only after the release of her song "Munch" on August 10th, 2022, did internet personalities and meme creators take notice of her twerk.

For instance, on September 8th, 2022, a video from an Ice Spice concert in Philadelphia was posted by TikToker^[3] laughsmedia who showed the crowd cheering only after Ice Spice did her signature move. In two months, the video received roughly 1.8 million plays and 255,200 likes (shown below, left). On September 11th, TikToker^[4] xbwavy_ posted a video that joked about Ice Spice twerking to a "sad song," as in "No Clarity." Over the course of two months, it earned roughly 412,600 plays and 26,700 likes (shown below, right).

On September 14th, 2022, Twitter^[5] user CamSodaMare replied to a repost of Ice Spice's "No Clarity" video with, "Me when ice spice drop which means I’m finna see her twerk in 12 new angles," earning over 170 likes in two months. On September 16th, Twitter^[6] user Miss_Criss_ quote retweeted Ice Spice, saying, "One thing ice spice is gonna do is twerk & touch her vagina," gaining 13 likes in two months.

On September 24th, 2022, TikToker^[7] jetjohn posted a skit in which everyone at an Ice Spice concert chants "twerk" at her, earning roughly 1.5 million plays and 284,600 likes in a month and a half (shown below, left). On September 29th, TikToker^[8] blackguynamedisssac posted a similar skit, gaining roughly 204,300 plays and 22,200 likes in a month and a half (shown below, right).

Going into October 2022, Ice Spice's signature move garnered more meme attention. For instance, on October 11th, 2022, Twitter^[9] user big_business_ captioned a basketball highlight reel of LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers with, "Ice Spice doing that chest grab and twerk combo," earning roughly 74,000 likes in one month (shown below).

On October 12th, 2022, TikToker^[10] and rapper lilaltoid posted a video in which he told his viewers that his music manager wanted him to make TikToks like Ice Spice in order to promote his music. TikToker lilaltoid then joked about Ice Spice's twerking, doing her signature move and essentially making fun of his manager's request. Over the course of one month, the video received roughly 8.4 million plays and 2.2 million likes (shown below, left). On October 31st, TikToker^[11] twon1_ posted a video with text overlay reading, "When Ice drops her pencil," in which he mimicked Ice Spice's signature move when picking up a pencil. The video received roughly 7.6 million plays and 1.5 million likes in 11 days (shown below, right).
