Ibai Llanos explaining things refers to two viral videos of Spanish YouTuber and eSports announcer Ibai Llanos explaining a subject while rapidly writing and drawing on a whiteboard. Circulated in memes among Spanish-speaking users since 2019, the videos gained global popularity as reactions and source material for GIF captions in September 2020 following a viral tweet.

Origin

On May 31st, 2019, Spanish YouTuber, streamer and eSports announcer Ibai uploaded[1] a video titled "El vídeo que necesitas para aprobar selectividad o cualquier examen importante" ("The video you need to pass a selection or any important exam"). In the video, Ibai talks rapidly while hectically drawing and writing on a whiteboard. The video received over 14.6 million views on YouTube in two years (shown below, left).

On June 23rd, 2020, Ibai uploaded[2] a similar video titled "Vuelve el mejor entrenador del planeta para ayudarte con la selectividad en 2020" ("The best coach on the planet is back to help you with selection in 2020"). The video received over 6.6 million views on YouTube in one year (shown below, rigth)

Spread

Both videos received viral spread online. For example, on November 6th, 2019, Facebook[3] page El blog que te hará pensar reposted the first video, with the reupload gaining over 1,300 reactions and 300 comments.

Following the release of the second video, both clips gained popularity as reactions among Spanish-speaking users as reactions, being used to illustrate posts of a person or a group hectically explaining something complicated, obscure or illogical.

On August 21st, 2020, Redditor[4] nikkorras posted one of the earliest English memes based on the format, gaining over 5,900 upvotes in /r/dankmemes subreddit in six months.

On September 3rd, 2020, Twitter[5] user @Ghostiepoio posted a viral meme based on the second video, with the video, sped-up and set to "Dry Out" by DJVI from the official Geometry Dash soundtrack, imagining Ibai explaining the meaning of the word Bomboclaat. The post received over 10.5 million views, 2,200 retweets and 30,300 likes.

Following the viral spread of the tweet, the sped-up video, accompanied by "Dry Out," gained significant popularity among users on Twitter, being used both in GIF captions and as a reaction.
