About
I Love You But Please Turn Off Your Phone Or Give Me A Dall is a copypasta inspired by a Grimes tweet to then-boyfriend Elon Musk after Musk tweeted "Pronouns suck" in mid-2020. Grimes' tweet has since been used by memers on Twitter in response to situations or tweets that they find upsetting from organizations or people they like.
Origin
On July 24th, 2020, Elon Musk[3] tweeted "Pronouns suck." In response, his then-girlfriend Grimes replied, "I love you but please turn off ur phone or give me a dall. I cannot support hate. Please stop this. I know this isn’t your heart." Musk's tweet remains active but Grimes has since deleted her reply (shown below). While it's unknown if Musk was referring to the trend of preferred pronouns or critiquing it, many users on Twitter interpreted it in a negative way.
Spread
The exchange led to widespread amusement online, particularly as Musk appeared to unfollow Grimes shortly after the exchange, though the pair later made up. Grimes' tweet began seeing more common use as a copypasta roughly a year later as Twitter users adopted it to humorously respond to posts they disagreed with.
For example, on October 4th, 2021, Twitter user @idisagrees[1] posted it in response to musical artist Arca announcing a track they had done with Sia and an appearance on Zane Lowe's show were both releasing that day, gaining over 25 retweets and 400 likes in roughly six months (shown below, left). On April 29th, 2022, Twitter user @growing_daniel[2] tweeted it in response to a Musk tweet about Adderall, gaining over 30 retweets and 1,500 likes in two weeks (shown below, right).
