How Hitler Could Have Won refers to a series of history memes parodying a viral post suggesting how Adolf Hitler could have won World War II if he did things differently. The post was originally shared on X / Twitter in August 2020, with the parody trend gaining popularity in September 2023. In the parodies, users suggest ways in which past events could have unfolded differently if certain things were changed.
Origin
On August 13th, 2020, X[1][2] user @RoaylistW posted a since-deleted tweet in which they argued how Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany could have won World War II if things were done differently (shown below). In the post, they brough up six arguably misinformed and questionable points that in their opinion could have changed the course of the war, including "Don't siege Leningrad, take it immediately", "Zerg rush Stalingrad" and "Ally with the Slavs against the commies".
Spread
On August 17th, 2020, Redditor Ekster666 reposted the image in the /r/ShitWehraboosSay[3] subreddit, where it received over 1,400 reposts in four years.
On May 29th, 2023, X[4] user @N3weis posted the earliest found parody of the post, a meme about Carthaginian general Hannibal that received over 50 reposts and 490 likes in two years (shown below).
On September 3rd, 2023, X[5] user @RuNoseP posted a screenshot of @RoyalistW's post, commenting, "one of the funniest tweets ever made". The repost gained over 2,200 reposts and 60,000 likes, and was followed by a surge in popularity of the parody format. For example, on September 5th, 2023, X[6] user @souljagoytellem made a parody post about American politician and the 1972 presidential election nominee George McGovern. The post (shown below) received over 20 reposts and 280 likes in one year.
More parodies of the post were shared online in late 2023 and through 2024.
