"Hey, Do Atheists Go to Hell", also known as The Boiler Room of Hell, is a memorable quote uttered by the character Peter Griffin on the American animated series Family Guy. The line begins a conversation between Peter and God, which went viral in October 2018, as people online replaced specifics in the conversation to fit particular opinions.

Origin

On May 20th, 2018, the episode of Family Guy entitled "Are You There God? It's Me Peter" aired in the United States.^[1] In the episode, while trapped in an elevator, Peter and God (both voiced by Seth MacFarlane) have the following conversation (video below):

Peter: Do atheists go to hell?
God: No.
Peter: How about people who say they are not religious but they are spiritual.
God: Straight to hell. To the boiler room of hell. All the way down. Sometimes I pull them out just so they think everything is going to be ok, but then I put them right back in.
Peter: Good. Good. That makes me happy.

The earliest known usage of the scene as a meme was published on /r/MemeEconomy ^[2] subreddit ^[2] on June 25th, 2018. The image does not stray from the dialogue in the episode, but rather presents the scene in comic form (shown below).

The meme returned in October 2018 with variations on the dialogue, specifically altering the line in which Peter asks about people who claim to be spiritual. On October 13th, Redditor^[3] theneomaster posted a version in which Peter asks, "How about normies who wore out spooktober memes 2 weeks before halloween?" The post received more than 6,100 points (97% upvoted) and 50 comments in less than two years (shown below, left).

The following day, Redditor^[4] Danny-DevitoTrashMan posted a variation in which Peter asks, "How about people who like a post then don't upvote?" The post received more than 16,000 points (86% upvoted) and 125 comments in less than two years (shown below, center).

Months later, Redditor^[5] y3ahboiy posted a version on the /r/HistoryMemes subreddit, which received more than 3,300 points (96% upvoted) in less than one year (shown below, right).
