About
Gekyume is a word created by the late rapper XXXTentacion meaning "a different state" and "the next universe of thinking." It also became the name of his son.
Origin
On March 29th, 2018, two YouTubers posted video of XXXTentacion defining "Gekyume" in videos taken from his Instagram Live (shown below).
Spread
On May 18th, 2018, dozens of definitions for "Gekyume" appeared on Urban Dictionary. [1] The most popular, posted by user Stokely, gained over 5,100 likes in the next nine months (shown below).
On June 28th, 2018, following the death of XXXTentacion, "Gekyume" was featured in the music video for his song "SAD!", which saw over 107 million views on YouTube (shown below).
On November 24th, 2018, XXXTentacion's mother Cleopatra Bernard announced that the rapper's unborn child would be named "Gekyume."[2] The child was born January 26th, 2019.[3] Shortly after the birth of the child, some memes about it were spread on social media. For example, YouTube user Jordan lol posted a remix parody of what a Gekyume song might sound like, gaining over 390,000 views (shown below).
The song led to the creation of some parody videos. Twitter user @MiniYeets posted a video of a man dancing to the song (shown below, top). User @xsinternfr also posted the song (shown below, bottom).
