Fat Black Guy With Bands refers to three photographs of a young Black man wearing an Icon hoodie with a gun tucked in his waistband while posing with a large stack of money for the camera, including shots of him showing the cash to the camera and pressing the stack against his ear akin to a phone. Originally posted by Instagram user cbmweewee in December 2020, the photographs have been used in memes since 2023. "Band" is a slang name for a thousand dollars, typically held together by a rubber band.
Origin
On December 1st, 2020, Instagram[1] user cbmweewee posted three photographs of himself posing with a large stack of money on the porch of a house. In the first photograph, cbmweewee shows the stacks of cash to the camera. In the second picture, cbmweewee presses the stack against his ear, doing the "money calling" gesture. In the last picture, cbmweewee holds the money in one hand and flips off the camera with the other. The post received over 570 likes in four years.
Spread
The photograph did not see presence in memes until May 2023. On May 10th, 2023, X[2] / Twitter user @JefferyxBball posted the second photograph with the caption, "What would his rap name would be?" The post (shown below) received over 2,400 reposts and 33,000 likes in one year and gathered multiple humorous replies and quote posts. On November 16th, 2023, Instagram[3] account raphousetv posted the photograph with a similar caption.
On September 22nd, 2023, iFunny[4] user LouisWain posted the photograph with the caption "Me if communicating by sending only weird photos was a job." The post (shown below) garnered over 460 smiles and was widely circulated online in the following months.
The photo saw more use in memes in 2024. Notably, on July 14th, 2023, the gimmick X account Fat Nigga With Bands (@fatniggawithband) was launched, using one of cbmweewee's photographs to reply to posts on the platform (example posts[5][6] shown below). The gimmick account garnered over 5,500 followers on the platform in two days.
