Fake Luigi Mangione Alibis or People Covering Up for Luigi Mangione refers to social media posts in which people vouch that Luigi Mangione, the prime suspect in the UnitedHealthcare CEO murder, was with them at the hours when the murder took place on December 4th. The posts, which often include photographs with Mangione edited in, gained virality across social media following Mangione's arrest in mid-December 2024.
Origin
Luigi Mangione is the main suspect in the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City on December 4th, 2024, who was arrested on December 9th following a report from a McDonald's employee. Online, numerous people voiced their support for the alleged shooter, many treating him as a misguided hero standing against the perceived corruption of the American healthcare system.
On December 9th, 2024, the Facebook[1] page Keep Tulsa posted a photograph of a location in Tulsa, Oklahoma with Luigi Mangione edited in and paired with the caption providing Mangione an alibi for the time window the UnitedHealthcare CEO murder was committed. The post (shown below) received over 257,000 reactions and 45,000 shares on Facebook in three days.

On December 10th, 2024, X[2] user @Gritty20202 shared a screenshot of the Facebook post, which received over 20,000 reposts and 420,000 likes in two days.
In the following hours, multiple joke posts in which users claimed that Luigi Mangione was with them at various locations at the time of the crime were shared on X, Instagram, Reddit and other social media.
For example, on December 10th, 2024, X[3] user @francisxwolf wrote that Luigi Mangione was with them in Chicago during the time of the crime, posting an image in which Mangione was photoshopped next to the Cloud Gate sculpture. The post (shown below) received over 480 reposts and 7,400 likes in two days.
On December 11th, 2024, American death metal band Sanguisugabogg posted a similar meme that gained over 9,500 reposts and 182,000 likes on X[4] in one day (shown below). It was also reposted to the subreddit /r/MetalMemes[5] on December 12th, receiving over 92,000 upvotes in 12 hours.
