About

Noida, India Twin Tower Demolition refers to the planned demolition of a set of illegally erected towers owned by real estate developer "Supertech" in Noida, India on August 28th, 2022. The demo garnered immense, often comical, media attention in the weeks leading up to the destruction of the two residential buildings, particularly mocking the coverage of various Indian news stations and their graphics. The event was also prominently referenced in memes that likened the falling of the towers to the September 11th, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States.

Origin

In 2004, Indian real estate developers Supertech were granted approval for a housing project by Noida Authority. The developers constructed the initial buildings but continued to receive approval for and begin construction on previously unauthorized buildings. The initial residents of the towers moved the court to stop new constructions, citing a lack of residents' consent for new towers within the same housing complex, the violation of rules requiring a minimum of 16 meters of distance between buildings, and the new construction coming up in area marked for green space.

India Today's official YouTube[4] account released an explainer for the timeline of the conflict on August 24th, 2022, gathering over 400,000 views in nearly a week since its upload (seen below).

The legal battle eventually made its way to the Supreme Court of India, and Supertech was found to have colluded with local authorities to receive permission to erect the buildings. The Supreme Court then ordered the buildings to be demolished by Noida authorities in February 2022, and the towers were finally demolished on August 28th, 2022.

India Today's official YouTube[5] account uploaded a video of the demolition to YouTube as well, racking up over 2 million views in roughly 48 hours (seen below).

Spread

The viral event received considerable news coverage in the weeks leading up to it, with internet users frequently commenting on the absurd, over-the-top and sometimes historically insensitive nature of some of the media's green-screen escapades. For example, on August 28th, 2022, Twitter[1] user @theprayagtiwari posted a tweet showing screen captures from various television news segments covering the slated demolition (seen below). The post gathered over 3,000 likes in two days.

Also on August 28th, Instagram[2] user @luxx.ded posted a slideshow of Indian news anchors covering the demolition with humorous graphics being used, including a shot of an anchor on a CGI boom lift (seen below, top) and another in a green-screen helicopter cockpit headed straight toward the towers resembling a plane cockpit in reference to 9/11 (seen below, bottom). The post gathered over 2,000 likes in two days.
