About
Enel Face refers to a comical facial expression made by One Piece antagonist Enel. It has been a popular meme among the One Piece fandom, and edits of the face featuring characters from other IPs have inspired separate memes.
Origin
The image comes from chapter 279 of the manga One Piece, Pirate Luffy vs. God Enel, which released in the Shonen Jump on June 9th, 2003. In the scene, Enel, a man who ate the Goro Goro Fruit which turned his body into pure electricity, starts fighting the hero, Monkey D. Luffy, who ate the Gomu Gomu Fruit which gave his body the properties of rubber, including electrical resistance. Upon realizing that none of his attacks have any meaningful effect, Enel cracks a comically exaggerated shocked face with a gaping jaw and bulging eyes (see below).
Spread
This face rapidly became popular among the One Piece fandom as a template for redraws of other characters and as a reaction image. For example, on March 19th, 2010, DeviantArt[2] user daddius posted a Demotivational Poster with Enel's face, gaining over 216 favorites in fourteen years.
One Piece author Eiichiro Oda built on the popularity of this meme by drawing a similar shocked face on many other characters through the course of the manga (compilation shown below).
