About
DJ Khaled Dancing is a viral video of hip-hop producer and internet personality DJ Khaled dancing in his studio on a "We The Best" rug while wearing red shorts and a white shirt. The video of him shuffling went viral on Instagram and later spread to TikTok as a meme format. Some videos paired him with the Pinegrove Shuffle or the phrasal template "Me Doing X When This Banger Come On" in which meme creators pretended that ordinary, household and real-world sounds were music that DJ Khaled was dancing to. The original video was posted in 2022.
Origin
On September 23rd, 2022, DJ Khaled posted a video to his TikTok[1] that showed him dancing on a "We The Best" rug in presumably his studio. Over the course of 10 months, the video gained roughly 6.3 million plays and 652,700 likes (shown below, left). The video quickly earned reposts on TikTok[2] after it was uploaded. Then, variant, memetic usage surfaced on the platform. For instance, the first-discovered, viral, variant usage of the video was posted by TikToker[3] @twosteppinmf on November 22nd, 2022, who synced the video with American Football's "Never Meant," gaining roughly 1.3 million plays and 258,300 likes in eight months (shown below, right).

Spread
Despite usage in late 2022, the video of DJ Khaled dancing didn't become a prevalent meme format until mid-2023. Its resurgence started on June 9th, 2023, when TikToker[4] @onelesslonelybussy posted a video that referenced the then-recent Pinegrove Shuffle trend, gaining roughly 3.9 million plays and 680,300 likes in one month (shown below, left). Going into July 2023, TikTokers started pairing the video with a phrasal template that roughly followed "Me doing X when this banger come on" in which ordinary, household and real-world sounds were imagined to be songs that Khaled was dancing to. The first-discovered post of this nature was uploaded by TikToker[5] @nv.doglice0 on June 28th, and it referenced a car's turn signal. In 13 days, the video gained roughly 11.2 million plays and 2.6 million likes (shown below, right).

Continuing into July 2023, the format gained more iterations. For instance, on July 2nd, 2023, TikToker[6] @lj4_mvp posted an iteration about a microwave beeping, earning roughly 228,200 likes in nine days (shown below). The memes soon earned reposts on YouTube[7] in July 2023.
