About

Data Saying "The Irish Unification of 2024" is a line said by Data in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation which is often used out of context. The screencap in which Data says the line is often used in response to various happenings in the United Kingdom that would possibly lead to said Irish unification.

Origin

The scene comes from Star Trek: The Next Generation in the episode titled The High Ground, which first aired on January 29th, 1990.[1] In the scene (shown below), Jean-Luc Picard and Data talk about the effectiveness of terrorism in promoting political change. Picard states that he doesn't believe that political power should "come from the barrel of a gun", while Data says that there were times when it was successful. Data then lists examples such as "The independence of Mexican state from Spain", "The Irish unification of 2024", and "The Kenzie Rebellion". Due to the sensitive political nature of the episode it was banned from airing in the UK until 2007.
