About
Christ-chan is a moe anthropomorphized character created by members of 4chan’s /pol/ (politically incorrect) board as a representation of Christian fundamentalism and evangelism.
Origin
On December 1st, 2014, an anonymous /pol/ user created a thread discussing the use of anime-inspired illustrations to convert more people to Islam (shown below, left).[1] After some discussion, another user later identified as “Chaby” decided to take the concept of using cute anime-inspired art to proselytize people into Christianity.[3] After some conceptualization, the first visual representation of Christ-chan was unveiled as a blue-eyed European woman wearing a modest blue-green dress and a cross necklace around her neck, with personality traits similar to a stereotypical Christian evangelist (shown below, right).
Spread
Christ-chan was well received by /pol/ who anointed her as board mascot, along the lines of a typical 4chan board anthropomorphism. New Christ-chan art was initially sparse; however, in February 2015, Christ-chan posts became more popular and the creation of original content increased. Christ-chan is now a regular feature of /pol/ drawthreads. As of May 21st 2015, the search term "christ-chan" produces 1,122 results in the /pol/ archive.[4]
Related Sub-memes
Deus vult
Christ-chan is often paired with the phrase "deus vult", a Latin phrase meaning "God wills it" typically associated with the First Crusade.[2] Christ-chan artwork typically shows her using the phrase as an example of her strong Christian and anti-Islamic views.
