About

Cancel Genghis Khan was a viral campaign on Twitter calling for the cancelation of the 13th Century Emperor of the Mongol Empire Ghenghis Khan in August 2020. The hashtag #genghiskahnisoverparty trended on Twitter after one Twitter user posted a lengthy thread on why Ghenghis Khan was a horrible person. Shortly after, many Twitter users began to parody a 21st Century cancelation of the leader in various tweets.

Origin

On August 12th, 2020, Twitter user @priya_27_ posted an 18 tweet thread which has been preserved on threadreaderapp.[1] The thread began by saying, "THREAD: Genghis Khan did to central Asia what islamic invaders did to India, maybe worse. He single handedly killed 11% of world population at the time. Yet some want to glorify him as a hero conquerer. That's your personal choice but objectively, Genghis Khan was a barbarian." The tweet garnered over 5,000 likes that day.

Spread

On August 14th, 2020, Twitter user @GiantSonInExile[2] reposted the since-deleted tweet by @priya_27_ and said, "Genghis Khan died almost 800 years ago. I think maybe cancelling him isn't a huge priority right now" (shown below, left). The tweet gained over 3,000 likes in three days. That same day, Twitter user @bombsfall[3] commented on the thread by tweeting, "saw a thread cancelling genghis khan in 2020 and now i'm imagining khan stans who are like whoa ok it's been tough day for all of us, if genghis still means a lot to you that's VALID but we have to call out pillaging within the fandom and that means holding our heroes to account" and continued by saying, "wow i see some of you are still following genghis khan on here" (shown below, right).
