About
Bup is a term commonly associated with the Super Mario 64 speedrunner Simpleflips, deriving from a stretched out texture of Toad's face from the game. It is commonly used as a replacement for textures in rom-hacks of the game.
Origin
The first known use of the texture for a memetic purpose came with the creation of Toad-megeddon, a Super Mario 64 romhack by UsernamesAreHard, which was released on September 10th, 2016[3]. The hack replaced most of the textures in the game with the texture of Toad's face, and changed almost all of the game's textboxes to be about Toad. On September 12th, 2016, romhacker Kaze released Super Releasio 64[2] which was a significantly modified version of Toad-megeddon, which caused the game's physics to become glitchy and difficult to control, and replaced all the instruments of the game's soundtrack with various Toad voice lines.
Spread
Super Releasio 64 quickly gained attention from Super Mario 64 speedrunners and streamers, specifically Twitch user Simpleflips. After streaming the rom hack, the association between the phrase and the texture of Toad's face quickly spread throughout his viewer base, causing many users to make references to it in future romhacks and donations to him.
Similarly, some viewers used the "bup" sound effect as a sample with which to make music, which they would then play on Simpleflips' channel via a plugin that allows donators to request songs (examples shown below).
